🔴 Express Entry Pool Shrinks, but Competition at the Top Grows
Canada’s latest Express Entry data shows that the candidate pool became smaller in the first half of August, but that does not necessarily mean competition is easing.

Between August 3 and August 16, the total number of profiles dropped by 2,241, falling to 226,859. Much of that decline came from candidates with CRS scores between 351–400 and 501–600.

At the same time, the number of candidates with scores above 500 actually increased overall, rising from 19,096 to 20,205. The 471–490 range also grew, adding more than 400 profiles during the same period.

The changes followed four Express Entry draws between August 4 and 7, in which IRCC issued 8,807 invitations across the PNP, Canadian Experience Class, French-language and Transport categories.

The figures suggest that while recent draws have reduced the overall size of the Express Entry pool, candidates with stronger CRS scores continue to accumulate, keeping the upper score ranges highly competitive.

🔴 Fraud Conviction Puts International Student’s Future in Canada at Risk
A recent case in Newfoundland and Labrador highlights how a criminal conviction can create serious consequences for temporary residents in Canada, even when the offence does not involve a large amount of money.

An international student was convicted of eight counts of fraud under $5,000 and one count of theft under $5,000 after working part-time at a grocery store. Court evidence showed that meat products had repeatedly been relabelled with significantly lower prices, resulting in approximately $2,700 in losses to the store.

The student argued that discounted or unsaleable meat was commonly provided to employees with permission and disputed the circumstances surrounding the allegations. However, the court ultimately found him guilty.

His lawyer is now asking the judge for an absolute or conditional discharge, arguing that a criminal conviction could seriously affect his immigration status, education, future employment and ability to remain in Canada. His study permit is set to expire on September 30, and the outcome of the criminal case could also affect his plans to extend his status and pursue post-graduation opportunities.

The Crown has instead proposed a conditional sentence followed by probation. A sentencing decision is expected on August 20.

The judge also emphasized an important point: a criminal conviction does not automatically mean deportation. Immigration consequences depend on the circumstances of the case and the applicable immigration process.

For international students and other temporary residents, however, this case is an important reminder that actions resulting in criminal charges or convictions can extend far beyond the criminal court. They may affect immigration applications, work opportunities and the ability to continue building a life in Canada.

🔴 What Express Entry Draws Reveal About the Growing Importance of French in Canada
Canada’s recent Express Entry activity is sending a clear message: French-language ability has become increasingly important in the country’s immigration strategy.

While categories tied directly to labour-market needs, such as STEM, healthcare, trades, construction and education, have seen relatively limited or less frequent draws, French-language proficiency rounds have continued to appear regularly and often invite thousands of candidates at a time.

The contrast is particularly noticeable in CRS scores. French-language draws have sometimes invited candidates with scores in the high 300s, while candidates in other Express Entry streams may need scores above 500 to receive an invitation. This does not mean French-speaking candidates lack professional skills or experience, but it does show how much weight IRCC is currently placing on French proficiency.

🔸 Why is French receiving so much attention?
Canada has a broader goal of increasing Francophone immigration outside Quebec and strengthening French-speaking minority communities across the country. The frequency and size of these draws suggest that French is not simply an additional advantage in Express Entry. It can now be a major factor in a candidate’s chances of receiving permanent residence.

At the same time, the difference between French-language draws and occupation-based categories raises questions about how Canada balances its demographic goals with immediate labour shortages.

One possible approach could be to combine the two priorities more closely, for example by giving additional preference to French-speaking candidates who also work in healthcare, STEM, trades, construction or education.

For prospective immigrants, however, the current direction of Express Entry offers an important takeaway: learning French can significantly strengthen a candidate’s immigration prospects and may open opportunities that would otherwise require a much higher CRS score.

🔴 IRCC considers new Express Entry priorities for 2027, with AI and tech talent in focus
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has opened consultations on the priorities that could shape Express Entry category-based selection in 2027, with a stronger focus on highly skilled international talent, emerging technologies and artificial intelligence. The consultation is open until September 1, 2026.

IRCC currently has 10 Express Entry categories for 2026, covering French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education, transport, physicians with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits.

For 2027, the department says it is considering expanding its approach to attracting and retaining highly skilled workers while potentially narrowing or changing some of the categories aimed at labour shortages. This means the current 2026 categories are not guaranteed to remain unchanged next year.

🔸 Four talent groups being considered
IRCC’s consultation survey specifically asks for feedback on four groups that could receive greater priority through category-based selection:

▶ Candidates whose profiles align with the Global Talent Stream, including workers in technology and AI;
▶ Researchers, in connection with Canada's Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative;
▶ Candidates aligned with IRCC’s International Talent Attraction Strategy, including workers in emerging technologies, healthcare and skilled trades;
▶ U.S. H-1B visa holders, many of whom work in STEM and other specialized occupations.

Importantly, IRCC has not announced these as four confirmed new Express Entry categories. They are currently areas being considered as part of the consultation process, and some overlap with existing categories—for example, researchers already have a dedicated category in 2026.

🔸 Existing categories could also change
IRCC is also asking participants which existing categories should continue in 2027 and whether occupation-based categories should become more targeted. The department says limited immigration spaces may require it to focus on a smaller number of occupations facing the most significant shortages.

The French-language category also appears likely to remain an important priority, as Canada continues working toward increasing French-speaking permanent resident admissions outside Quebec.

Members of the public and other stakeholders can participate in IRCC’s online survey and provide feedback on which categories and economic priorities should receive greater emphasis in 2027. The survey closes September 1, 2026.

One important clarification: IRCC is currently considering four talent-focused areas. It has not yet confirmed that these will become four new Express Entry categories for 2027.

🔴 British Columbia issued more than 500 invitations through the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) on August 6, targeting candidates working in several high-demand occupations.

The latest Skills Immigration draw focused on five occupational groups under the province’s Care and Build priorities: childcare, healthcare, education, veterinary care, and construction trades.

Construction trades received the highest number of invitations, with 187 candidates invited at a minimum score of 88. Another 183 invitations went to childcare candidates with a minimum score of 102.

Healthcare workers received 124 invitations with a cut-off score of 84, while six candidates in veterinary care were invited with a minimum score of 72. Fewer than five invitations were issued in education, where the minimum score was 68.

🔸 BC continues to prioritize essential occupations
The August 6 round was British Columbia’s fifth occupation-specific Skills Immigration selection of 2026.

The province has been adjusting its immigration selections to focus more closely on areas facing labour shortages. Future draws may therefore target different occupations or use factors such as work experience, education, language ability, wage, job location, and other provincial priorities.

So far in 2026, the BC PNP has issued at least 4,236 invitations through Skills Immigration.

🔸 More than 8,000 candidates remain in the pool
There were 8,306 registrations in the BC PNP Skills Immigration pool as of the latest reporting period.

Candidates with scores between 100 and 109 made up the largest group, with 1,651 registrations. This was followed by candidates scoring between 90 and 99, with 1,468 registrations, and those between 110 and 119, with 1,332.

Candidates in the registration pool may be considered in future BC PNP invitation rounds depending on the selection criteria used by the province.

Canada has held its first Express Entry draw under the renewed Transport category, issuing 300 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.

Candidates needed a minimum CRS score of 470 to qualify. The tie-breaking rule applied to profiles submitted before 2:55 p.m. UTC on October 11, 2025.

🔸 First Transport Draw Since Category Revamp
IRCC removed the Transport category from category-based selection in February 2025. It was reintroduced in February 2026 with a substantially different list of eligible occupations.

The August 7 draw is the first time IRCC has used the revamped category to select Express Entry candidates.

With the latest round, IRCC has now conducted 46 Express Entry draws in 2026.

🔸 Eligible Transport Occupations
The current Transport category includes four eligible occupations:
▶ Aircraft mechanics and aircraft inspectors — NOC 72404
▶ Air pilots, flight engineers and flying instructors — NOC 72600
▶ Aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors — NOC 22313
▶ Automotive service technicians, truck and bus mechanics, and mechanical repairers — NOC 72410

Candidates must have at least 12 months of full-time equivalent work experience within the past three years in one of these occupations. The experience can be gained in Canada or abroad.

So far this year, Express Entry selections have continued to favour candidates with Canadian work experience, provincial nominees, and French-speaking applicants.

IRCC has issued a total of 113,423 ITAs in 2026, including 48,250 through the Canadian Experience Class and 45,500 through French-language proficiency draws.

Canada held a new Express Entry draw for Canadian Experience Class candidates on August 5, 2026, issuing 3,000 Invitations to Apply for permanent residence.

The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score was 516, unchanged from the previous CEC draw held on July 21. Candidates with a score of exactly 516 were invited only if they had submitted their Express Entry profile before July 3, 2026, at 9:35:13 p.m. UTC.

The August 5 draw was 50% larger than the two previous CEC rounds, which each issued 2,000 invitations. Despite the higher number of invitations, the CRS cutoff remained at 516. CEC cutoffs have remained between 514 and 518 since April 2026.

This draw followed a Provincial Nominee Program round on August 4, in which IRCC invited 507 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 768. The back-to-back rounds continue IRCC’s frequent use of program-specific selections for candidates with Canadian work experience or provincial nominations.

Candidates who received an invitation have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence. Applicants should ensure that their language results, employment documents and other supporting information remain accurate and valid before submitting their application.

🔴 Ontario Opens New Permanent Residence Stream
Ontario has opened intake for its new Ontario Workforce Priority Stream, giving eligible foreign nationals a new pathway to provincial nomination and permanent residence.

As of August 4, 2026, candidates can create an Expression of Interest through the OINP e-Filing Portal. Applicants applying with a job offer must link their profile to an eligible position submitted by an Ontario employer through the Employer Portal.

🔸 The new stream includes three pathways:
▶ Higher-skilled workers
▶ Lower-skilled workers
▶ Eligible self-employed physicians practising in Ontario

Candidates with active profiles will be ranked under a points-based system. Ontario will periodically invite selected applicants to submit a complete application for provincial nomination.

An Expression of Interest remains valid for up to 12 months. Candidates who do not receive an invitation during that period must create a new profile.

Some higher-skilled applicants and self-employed physicians may also be nominated through Express Entry, which could provide faster federal processing.

Ontario is also planning future streams for healthcare workers, entrepreneurs and applicants with exceptional achievements in fields such as science, technology, innovation, academia and the arts. Full details and launch dates have not yet been announced.

Canada has strengthened its financial assessment process for study permit applications. Under the new rules, immigration officers will carefully review both the amount and the source of an applicant's funds.

Applicants may also be asked to provide additional financial or employment documents to prove they can support themselves while studying in Canada.

▶ Up to six months of bank statements may now be requested (previously four months).
▶ Officers will examine the source of all funds more closely.
