Have a Canadian parent or grandparent and a place at a Canadian school? The wait for proof of citizenship is now around 25 months - but IRCC will consider processing a citizenship certificate urgently so an applicant can attend school, college or university.

It matters more than it sounds. Average undergraduate tuition in 2025/26 is $7,734 for a Canadian citizen and $41,746 for an international student, according to Statistics Canada.

A strong request needs an explanation letter, proof of the study plan, and evidence of the registrar's deadline. Here is what to include.

Thinking about New Brunswick? August was a quiet month there, with one exception.

The province selected 68 Atlantic Immigration Program applications across rounds on August 10 and August 20, 2026. Seven occupational categories made the list, among them construction trades, manufacturing, professional and IT, sales and services, and transportation. Health care, included back in July, was not among them.

The AIP works through designated employers, so a job offer is still the starting point.

Good news if you have been waiting on the Atlantic Immigration Program in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The province issued 140 invitations on August 26 - 94 under the NLPNP and 46 through the AIP. That is the biggest AIP batch since March, and it landed right after an August 18 round with no AIP selections at all, which suggests the province is working the two streams in alternating batches rather than splitting every draw.

That brings 2026 to 2,459 invitations across twelve rounds, well ahead of last year's pace.

Planning to pass your Canadian citizenship to a child born abroad? Check your records before you apply.

IRCC refreshed its citizenship certificate guide on August 25, 2026. For children born outside Canada on or after December 15, 2025 to a parent also born outside Canada, one parent must document 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada before the birth. Passports, T-4 slips, transcripts, leases and utility bills all count, in clear colour copies. And if the paperwork is missing, relatives can no longer swear the affidavit that fills the gap.

Thinking about building a business in British Columbia as your route to permanent residence? The province just invited 16 entrepreneurs.

In the August 25 BC PNP Entrepreneur Immigration draw, 11 invitations went to the Base category and five to the Regional pilot, both at a minimum score of 116. It is the first Regional round this year with an exact published count, and the Base cut-off slipped a point from July's 117.
