Ontario Backtracks on Controversial Rental Proposal — Here’s What Actually Happened

The Ontario government just backed away from a proposal that had tenants across the province worried about losing rent control stability.

They were considering changes to “security of tenure” — the rule that allows leases to automatically continue month-to-month after the first year.
If passed, it could have opened the door to fixed-term leases only, meaning:

Tenants could be required to reapply every year

No automatic renewal after 12 months

Easier evictions and potential rent hikes between leases

After major public backlash — including campaigns from tenant groups like ACORN Canada — the government announced:
