Commercial truck drivers will remain capped at a maximum speed of 105 km/h across Ontario, even as the province rolls out a massive speed limit expansion for passenger vehicles. The Ministry of Transportation confirmed that the newly announced 110 km/h limits, which are expanding across an additional 938 kilometers of 400-series highways this summer, will strictly exclude heavy commercial traffic.

By the end of September, the higher 110 km/h limit will cover nearly 89% of Ontario's highway network, including major stretches of the QEW, Highway 400, and Highway 401. While commuters traveling between Sarnia, Toronto, and Ottawa stand to save up to 30 minutes per trip, transport trucks must legally keep their mechanical speed limiters pinned at the standard 105 km/h.

The policy is designed to maintain strict road safety on North America’s busiest economic corridors, but safety advocates warn the widening speed gap between fast-moving cars and capped trucks could create aggressive lane-weaving. To ensure compliance, the province recently introduced legislation skyrocketing the minimum fine for commercial speed limiter violations from $250 to $1,000.

🚗 Ontario is raising highway speed limits — here’s what you need to know

The province is increasing speed limits from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on many 400-series highways across Ontario.

✔️ Applies to multiple sections of highways like the 401, 403, 416, and more
✔️ Covers hundreds of kilometres across the province
✔️ Based on studies showing these roads were already designed for higher speeds

📅 Changes began rolling out in 2024 and continue expanding where it’s considered safe.

Important:
Even with higher limits, strict penalties still apply:

- Stunt driving charges can still apply and 150 km/h+ can still lead to serious consequences

While this may reduce travel time, drivers should remember:
Higher limits don’t mean risk-free driving — enforcement and penalties remain in place.

If you’ve been charged with speeding or stunt driving, understanding your options can make a significant difference.

🚨 OPP OFFICER DISMISSED FOLLOWING CRIMINAL CONVICTION 🚨

An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) adjudicator has officially ordered the termination of Provincial Constable Roberto Visconti following a serious breach of public trust.

Here are the details from the official decision:

The Misconduct: Constable Visconti was criminally convicted of Breach of Trust under the Criminal Code of Canada on June 12, 2024.

The Scheme: Over a three-year period, Constable Visconti gave extreme preferential treatment to just two local tow truck companies. Out of 703 traffic tickets he issued, 700 of the towing referrals went to those two specific companies—despite 80 different operators acting in the area.

The Financial Impact: By tipping off these companies about his radar locations and shifts, his preferential treatment generated approximately $925,000 in total financial benefits for them.

The Hearing: The disciplinary hearing was held in writing and in absentia (in his absence) after Visconti repeatedly refused to participate, cooperate, or respond to official notices from Canada Post and the Prosecution.

The Verdict: Adjudicator Leonard Favreau ruled that Visconti's actions represented a "serious and marked departure from the standards expected of a police officer." To protect the public interest and maintain trust in law enforcement, Constable Visconti’s employment with the OPP has been terminated effective immediately.

⚖️ New Practice Directions in OCJ (POA) Matters – What You Need to Know

Recent updates to practice directives in Ontario Court of Justice Provincial Offences Act (POA) matters are now in effect, and they significantly impact how cases move through the system.

These directives introduce more rigorous procedural requirements and a higher standard of compliance across all stages of proceedings.

These changes are intended to streamline proceedings, reduce delays, and enhance overall court efficiency. At the same time, they place greater responsibility on defendants and representatives to ensure procedural compliance at every stage.

If you’re dealing with a traffic ticket or any POA charge, understanding these updates is critical. Missing a required step or deadline can directly affect your ability to defend the charge.
