Today, I received the latest issue of the Queen’s University alumni magazine, and opening it brought back so many memories of my time at Queen’s as a student in the Graduate Diploma in Immigration and Citizenship Law program.
It reminded me of the privilege of being part of this incredible institution and how much the experience shaped me, both personally and professionally.
I still remember my very first course in the very first semester - ICL 810: Foundations of Canadian Immigration Law. It was driving me nuts! 😅
Coming from a business studies background, transitioning into law was one of the most challenging experiences of my academic journey. There were moments of tears, overwhelming deadlines, and days when I wondered how I would manage it all. But there were also moments of immense joy and pride, especially when I celebrated straight A’s after countless hours of hard work.
Looking back, I realize that Queen’s gave me so much more than academic knowledge. It taught me how to approach complex legal issues, conduct meaningful legal research, and look beyond the paperwork to understand the people behind each case.
Most importantly, it taught me the value of diversity, inclusion, and treating every client with empathy and respect. These lessons have stayed with me and continue to guide me in my work as an immigration professional.
Every immigration journey carries a story, a hope, and often years of sacrifice. I feel privileged to use the knowledge and skills I gained at Queen’s to help individuals and families navigate some of the most important moments of their lives.
Today, when I look back at those difficult days, I feel proud of how far I have come. What once brought me to tears has become one of the most meaningful parts of my professional journey.
Thank you, Queen’s University, for challenging me, helping me grow, and giving me the foundation to make a difference in the lives of others.
Forever grateful to be a Queen’s alumna.
