“You get an A+ Nicolle.”
That made my day.

Today, I realized being a children’s lawyer is a bit like directing an animated movie. It needs to land with the target audience—the kids—so they understand the story, the characters, and the message. But it also has to have enough depth for the adults to connect with it in their own way, to see their reality and experiences reflected in it.

Those words above came from my 8-year-old client after I shared my Disclosure Memo with her. I handed her a red pen and said, “Grade my script.”

As a people pleaser, of course I was thrilled with my grade. But even more, I was moved knowing that the hours I’d spent listening to her story, and putting her views and preferences into words, had made her feel heard and understood. Let’s just say it was worth celebrating—with a Slushee and popcorn.

This is my work. And days like this make me deeply grateful for the privilege of waking up and serving my child clients.

Hello, I’m a people pleaser 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻. The thought of making someone happy? It’s like a rush of joy I can’t resist. I love helping, saying yes, and being the person others can count on.

But and it’s a big but, sometimes, that “yes” comes at the expense of my own time, energy, or even family. And then, halfway through, I’m left feeling overwhelmed—or worse—resentful. Not because I don’t care, but because I’ve overcommitted myself… again.

The difference now? I pause.

Part of this shift has been understanding the deeper “why.” For me, people-pleasing isn’t just about kindness; it’s a behavior shaped by past experiences. Like many, I grew up in environments where keeping the peace, being useful, or making others happy felt safe. Knowing this doesn’t excuse overcommitting—but it does make me more compassionate with myself.

Now, I’m working on being both trauma-aware and trauma-responsive—pausing to ask:
• “Am I saying yes because I truly want to, or because it feels safer?”
• “What’s the cost of this yes—for me, my family, my time?”
• “Can I say no kindly and still feel connected?”

It’s not easy. That urge to please is still there. But being aware of it—and responding intentionally—has been a game changer. Pausing gives me space to make choices that align with my values and priorities. And when I do say yes, it’s because I really mean it.

To anyone else navigating this: you’re not alone. Being kind to others doesn’t mean you can’t be kind to yourself too.

What do you call Postman Pat once he retires?

Pat!

Now that we’ve got the smiles rolling, let’s talk about why they matter.

A smile may seem simple, but it carries incredible power. It can brighten someone’s day, spread warmth, and create an instant connection—all without saying a word.

Ajahn Brahm, a well-known Buddhist teacher, speaks beautifully about the importance of “the inner smile.”

He teaches that a smile isn't just something we show outwardly, but also a way to uplift our own hearts, especially during tough times.

Smiling, even when life is difficult, helps lighten the mind and bring a sense of joy and peace. When we smile from the heart, we cultivate kindness toward ourselves and those around us.

In my own experience, I’ve seen how a genuine smile can dissolve tension, build trust, and offer comfort, especially when working with families and children. It’s an act of kindness that spreads positivity far beyond what we might expect.

A smile is free, it’s effortless, and it’s one of the most beautiful ways we can share kindness with the world—starting with ourselves.

THE PAUSE OF AWARENESS

The power we have is our awareness, and you can develop it right now.

Start paying attention to which websites you visit, how often you are looking at your phone and how long you are spending in front of a screen all day.

Life is so busy.

Very often we get caught up in the busyness of life.

We can’t catch our breath before we are running to the next meeting, task or responsibility.

In this busyness, we have lost the ability to be still and to pause.

When we don’t like what we are doing, we feel distracted or bored and we find ourselves turning to our e-mails, our phone apps and social media sites.

If we actually pay attention to this, we will notice the cycle of habit we fall back on.

This small realization gives one the space to make a choice.

To choose to use time wisely or to continue with the cycle of habit.

Paying attention to what we are doing at any given moment brings with it a moment to pause.

To breathe. To be.

The Impact of Separation on Children: Why Their Voices Matter

Separation and family disputes can profoundly affect children, often leading to emotional trauma and instability. During such times, it’s crucial that children’s voices and perspectives are not only heard but also given the weight they deserve in legal proceedings.
Children can feel overwhelmed and sidelined in the chaos of family conflicts. That’s why having a dedicated advocate to represent their views is vital. As a Private Children’s Lawyer, I focus on ensuring that children’s voices are central to the legal process, advocating for their best interests with compassion and professionalism.
If the Office of the Children’s Lawyer (OCL) is unable to take on a case, I may be able to step in to provide the necessary support and advocacy. My goal is to ensure that every child’s perspective is considered, helping to mitigate the impact of separation and strive for resolutions that support their well-being.
If you’re facing a family dispute and want to ensure your child’s voice is heard, feel free to reach out. Together, we can work towards a solution that respects and prioritizes their needs.

Facing the Crisis

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law's research reveals a stark reality:
📢 96% of law students experience stress.
📢25% are at risk for alcoholism.
📢17% suffer from depression.
📢37% report mild to severe anxiety.
📢6% have had suicidal thoughts in the past year.
📢36% of lawyers surveyed by the ABA meet criteria for problematic drinking.
📢9% admit to abusing prescription pills.
American attorneys rank as the 5th most at-risk occupation for completed suicides. The global situation is likely similar.

Risk Factors:
💡 Trauma
💡Secrecy
💡Environment
If this is the mindset and energy entering the legal profession, imagine the long-term impact on the field. It’s clear: the profession is scarred and in need of healing.
We must do better. We need Protective and Proactive Measures :
🔑Awareness
🔑Normalization
🔑Community THIS IS THE KEY COMPONENT TO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For nearly six years, I have been advocating and sharing resources to promote wellness in the legal profession. We must be the change we wish to see.
