Summer weekends send thousands of Ontarians north.

Cottages are where families make memories—but they’re also unfamiliar environments. Uneven docks, aging staircases, poor lighting, slippery decks and waterfront hazards can all contribute to serious injuries.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that people sometimes overlook hazards when they’re on vacation.

Sometimes prevention is as simple as replacing a loose board or improving outdoor lighting.

Takeaway: Familiar places can feel safe—but unfamiliar guests may not recognize hidden hazards.

“But the X-Ray Looks Fine.”

One of the biggest misconceptions about personal injuries is that normal imaging always means someone has fully recovered.

It doesn’t.

I’ve represented many people whose biggest challenge wasn’t a broken bone—it was persistent pain that continued long after the initial injury had healed.

Chronic pain is real.

It affects work, sleep, relationships and quality of life in ways that aren’t always visible.

Recovery isn’t measured only by what appears on an X-ray.

It’s measured by how well someone is able to live their life.

Takeaway: Not every serious injury can be seen on a scan.

THIS WEEK’S INJURY INSIGHT - Summer Means More Than Just Road Construction

Orange construction signs become a familiar sight across Ontario every summer. It can be super frustrating, I totally get it. I would be lying to you if I said I wasn’t losing patience with the road construction almost everywhere. That said, here are some insights to share from a legal perspective.

Construction zones protect workers—and they also require extra patience from drivers.

Reduced speed limits, changing lane configurations and workers operating close to live traffic leave very little room for error.

Slowing down by a few kilometres per hour may only cost a minute or two.

It could save a life.

Takeaway: Work zones exist because someone is working just a few metres away.

Question: Do you slow down as soon as you see construction signs, or only once you reach the workers?

We all have to remember that’s someone’s loved one out there working in the hot conditions.

In Puerto Rico, apparently even STATUES need to keep it classy. 😳🗿

That’s right — public nudity laws are so strict that even your perfectly sculpted marble masterpiece could technically need some “coverage.”

So if Michelangelo rolled into town with David, someone might hand him a tiny pair of shorts and say:
“Sir… please respect the dress code.” 👖😂

Moral of the story:
In Puerto Rico, whether you’re human or granite… cover up!🩳🗿

Welcome to Arkansas… where pronunciation is SERIOUS business 🤠⚖️

Say it with the class now:
🗣️ “AR-KAN-SAW”

❌ Not: “Ar-kan-sass”
❌ Not: “Ar-kansas”
❌ Definitely not if you want to survive the Arkansas Pronunciation Commission 😂

Apparently in Arkansas, mispronouncing the state name could make you “legally wrong.” 📚⚖️

Imagine getting pulled over like:
👮 “Sir, do you know why I stopped you?”
🙋 “No?”
👮 “You said AR-KAN-SAS.” 😭

Weird Law Wednesday - Wyoming 🤠

In Wyoming, forgetting to shut a gate isn’t just bad manners… it’s illegal. 🚨

Out here, that open gate isn’t just “someone else’s problem” — it could mean cattle wandering off, property damage, or a very awkward conversation with a rancher who’s been up since 4 a.m. 🐄🌄

So yes, Wyoming literally turned common sense into law:
👉 Open gate? You open it.
👉 You walk through it.
👉 You CLOSE it.
👉 Or… you might be opening your wallet instead. 💸

Moral of the story: In Wyoming, “leave it how you found it” isn’t advice — it’s the law.

Another round of PRP for this guy’s knee! 💉🩸

That’s my own blood spinning at 3200 RPM—separating out platelet-rich plasma for injection back into the joint. It’s one of many evolving treatments aimed at reducing pain and supporting recovery after injury.

In New Hampshire, it’s actually illegal to collect seaweed at night. Yes… you read that right. No moonlight beachcombing for your salty greens. 🥬🌊

This quirky rule dates back to a time when seaweed wasn’t just beach clutter—it was valuable for fertilizer and farming. Farmers relied on it, so the law helped prevent sneaky midnight harvesting raids under cover of darkness.

So if you’re ever strolling the shoreline at night and feel inspired to gather some “midnight salad”… think again. That could land you in hot water. 🌚⚖️

Married women can’t go fishing alone on Sundays.🎣

A classic example of old, patriarchal, religion-influenced laws… where apparently independence + a fishing rod = too much for a Sunday 😅

Luckily, this one’s long outdated—but still a wild reminder of how the law used to look.
