📢 STEM Draws & Express Entry in 2025 – Key Updates

If you are a STEM professional (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) considering immigration to Canada, here’s what you need to know about 2025:

🔹 No STEM Draws in 2025
So far, IRCC has not held any STEM-specific draws this year. The 2025 Immigration Levels Plan confirmed that STEM is not a priority category for 2025, with focus shifting toward healthcare, trades, and French proficiency.

🔹 STEM Draw History
• 2023: 2 draws, totaling 32,106 invitations (21% of all ITAs).
• 2024: 1 draw, totaling 13,749 invitations (14% of all ITAs).
• 2025: No STEM draws to date.

🔹 Why No STEM Draws?
IRCC continues to invite STEM professionals primarily through CEC and PNP draws instead of dedicated STEM rounds.

🔹 Looking Ahead
The good news: IRCC’s recent 2025 consultations suggest STEM is expected to return as a priority category in 2026.

🔹 What STEM Candidates Should Do
• Outside Canada: Focus on maximizing your CRS score to stay competitive when STEM draws return.
• Inside Canada: Continue leveraging CEC and PNP opportunities, where many STEM candidates are still receiving invitations.

📈 With the pause in STEM draws, if they return in 2026, CRS cut-offs may be higher than previous years (likely above 500).

At Megan Immigration, we are here to guide professionals — whether inside or outside Canada — on the best strategies to strengthen their profiles and improve their chances of success.

📢 New Language Test for Canadian Immigration!

🚨 Immigration News Update 🚨

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that it will soon begin accepting the TOEFL Essentials test as proof of English language proficiency for permanent residence applications.

This is an exciting development that will provide applicants with more flexibility and choice when proving their language skills.

The TOEFL Essentials test will apply to several economic immigration programs, including:
✅ Express Entry (FSWP, FSTP, CEC)
✅ Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)
✅ Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

📝 Key highlights of TOEFL Essentials:
• Duration: ~1.5 hours
• Skills tested: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking
• Available at secure test centres worldwide
• Fast results, with official scores ready in under a week

Currently, IRCC accepts CELPIP, IELTS, and PTE Core—and now, TOEFL Essentials will soon join this list.

📢 Stay tuned for updates on the official launch date and availability details.

Important Update for International Students:

If you have been accepted to a new Designated Learning Institution (DLI) for the Winter or Spring 2025 semester, you may be eligible to start your studies while waiting for your study permit extension!

Here’s what you need to do:
1. Be accepted to a DLI for the Winter/Spring 2025 semester.
2. Apply for a study permit extension.
3. Have a valid study permit that doesn’t have the DLI name printed on it.
4. Meet all existing study permit conditions.

If you meet these criteria, you can start attending your new DLI while your study permit extension is being processed!

Stay informed and make sure your study plans are on track for the upcoming semester. For more details, visit the official government website.

12/01/2024

On November 29, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a temporary suspension of new refugee sponsorship applications from groups of five and community sponsors under the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program. This decision aims to address the growing application inventory and lengthy processing times caused by high demand exceeding the annual sponsorship spaces outlined in Canada’s immigration levels plan.

The pause, effective until December 31, 2025, is intended to prevent further backlog and improve processing efficiency. IRCC will continue processing existing applications and plans to resettle 23,000 privately sponsored refugees in 2025.

While this measure impacts sponsors and partners, IRCC commits to collaborating with stakeholders to adapt to these changes and work on long-term improvements to the PSR Program.

International students in Canada can work 24 hours a week off-campus

Canada has introduced new work regulations for international students, allowing them to work up to 24 hours per week off-campus while classes are in session. Announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller, this change took effect on November 15. Previously, students were limited to 20 hours per week, a cap that had briefly been lifted to 40 hours during the pandemic to address labor shortages. The new 24-hour limit aims to strike a balance, enabling students to gain work experience and support themselves without affecting their academic progress.

Additionally, international students now face a new requirement: they must apply for a new study permit if they wish to change their designated learning institution (DLI). Previously, students could switch schools on the same permit by simply updating their IRCC account. This change is intended to enhance the integrity of Canada’s International Student Program, ensuring that students adhere to proper procedures when making significant changes to their academic plans.

These updates reflect Canada’s ongoing efforts to support international students while maintaining a structured and balanced approach to their work and study experiences.

11/08/2024

As of November 8, 2024, IRCC has ended the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) programs. All study permit applications must now go through the standard process, which may involve longer processing times and different requirements. The SDS, launched in 2018, offered expedited processing for students from specific countries who met additional criteria, such as providing language test scores and holding a Canadian GIC. Students planning to apply for Canadian study permits are now advised to start early due to these changes.
