Sometimes being a lawyer is like … a visit to the optometrist! A lawyer needs to adapt and view things through different lenses. Document review, client consultation, witness preparation, Court attendance, everything requires a different lens to see things differently and from a different perspective. A lawyer cannot be one-dimensional. One fixed viewpoint misses nuances. A lawyer has to change focus and switch those lenses. Versatility is not optional.

Sometimes being a lawyer is like…. being the Devil’s Advocate. Every client has their case with their story. Their position might be unpopular or run against a commonly held viewpoint. Lawyers often argue such positions. We also test the truth through opposition (the adversarial nature of litigation). Like history’s devil’s advocate, lawyers sharpen justice by challenging it. Uncomfortable? Sometimes. Essential? Absolutely. That’s the job: fighting for fairness, one argument at a time.

Sometimes being a lawyer is like …. being Sherlock Holmes! You have to look for clues. You have to build a case, often from scattered pieces of evidence (witness testimony, letters, Emails, financial records, etc.). You build a case and test if it will stand to scrutiny. How will the opponent think? How will a judge view the case? You have to pay attention to detail, read between the lines... What are the strengths and weaknesses of the case?!
