NEW GST Relief for First-Time Home Buyers: What you need to know.

On May 27, 2025, the federal government introduced a new initiative called the First-Time Home Buyers’ GST Rebate. This rebate is designed to help first-time home buyers by providing relief of up to $50,000 in federal GST (or HST) on their purchase of a new home. The government anticipates this measure will provide approximately $3.9 billion in tax relief over five years starting in 2025. This initiative is part of Canada’s broader efforts to improve housing affordability, particularly for young Canadians and families entering the housing market for the first time.

As a real estate lawyer, Niki is honoured to support this affordable housing campaign

This campaign is the 50 Women of Options. Niki is assisting in additional fundraising to support this great cause.

For 50 years, Options has worked as a registered charity to provide essential social services in Surrey, Langley, Delta, White Rock/South Surrey and Langley. The 50 Women of Options have offered to help by joining the campaign to raise $25,000 each in support of this project. Niki has stepped up to assist the 50 Women in committing to the goal of raising $1.5 million dollars which will go towards a 100-unit complex at 8135, 8123 and 8109 King George Boulevard.

These units will be for tenants including women fleeing violence, refugees, seniors, at-risk youth and others acing barriers in finding decent and affordable housing.

This campaign resonated with Niki because she was a previous crisis line volunteer at Options Community Services for over 5 years. Niki also worked at a women’s transition home in Surrey. She has seen first-hand from her previous experiences what is required for people to feel safe and the importance of providing shelter to those in need.

Meet Niki Sekhon, Magellan Real Estate Lawyers (“MREL”), Principal Lawyer

Niki focuses on residential real estate conveyancing, mortgages, commercial real estate and wills and estates. 

Niki was born and raised in Surrey, BC. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology from Simon Fraser University in 2008. She then attended law school at Bond University in Queensland, Australia from 2009 to 2011. She was called to the British Columbia bar in 2013.

Niki assists a wide range of clients from first time home buyers, high net worth investors, closely held corporations as well as lenders most credit unions, banks, mortgage investment corporations and other lending institutions.

Outside of work, Niki enjoys travelling and spending time with her husband and her two young children.

Niki is committed to the MREL credo to ensure that clients experience stress-free, fast and simple real estate transactions.
