September Artist Spotlight

Some artwork does more than fill a wall. It changes the feeling of a space.

This month, we are pleased to feature the work of Michelle Reid, an award-winning Canadian painter based in Kingston, Ontario.

Michelle is known for bold structural linework, sophisticated colour relationships, and a signature use of backlighting, an approach that has led her work to be described as “bottling light.” Her paintings move between landscapes, urban scenes, and quiet rural subjects, bringing colour, structure, and luminosity into the spaces they inhabit.

Her work has earned national and international recognition, including being selected to represent Canada at the Silk Road: Artists’ Rendezvous cultural exchange in China.

Through our Artist Spotlight series, we are grateful to feature Michelle’s work at the firm and invite our team, clients, and visitors to take a moment to enjoy it during their visit.

We’re very pleased to welcome Lydia Horton to Cunningham Swan as an Associate Lawyer in our Family and General Litigation groups.

Lydia joins us after completing her articles as a Judicial Law Clerk with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Beyond her legal education, she has enjoyed tutoring and volunteering with Braiding Diversity into Justice, the Hamilton Judicial Education Network, and Pro Bono Students Canada.

We’re especially happy that, after choosing to make Kingston home for herself and her family, Lydia has chosen Cunningham Swan as the place to pursue this next step in her career.

Summer Artist Spotlight

This spotlight looks a little different, with the opportunity to feature work from several artists in our space.

We are pleased to showcase Madison Henry, an 18-year-old artist who will be attending York University this fall to study Fine Arts. Inspired by nature, animals, and the beauty in often-overlooked details, Madison’s work brings together curiosity, imagination, and a touch of whimsy.

We are also pleased to feature three artists from Kingston Native Centre and Language Nest: Laura Cybulski, Cheryl Peters, and Yessica Rivera Belsham.

Laura Cybulski is an Inuk artist whose family is from Nunatsiavut, Labrador, and who is based in Amherstview, Ontario. Her abstract paintings are created intuitively, with each canvas evolving naturally as the work progresses.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share these artists’ work with our team and visitors, and we invite you to take a moment to enjoy the display during your visit.

Cunningham Swan was pleased to join Loyalist Township and community partners this past weekend for the naming ceremony and ribbon-cutting at the Barr Homes Aquatic Centre.

The firm’s $100,000 sponsorship supports the Cunningham Swan Aquatic Viewing Area, a space that will be used by swimmers, families, spectators, and community members for years to come.

David Munday attended the ceremony on behalf of Cunningham Swan, joining other partners in celebrating this important community facility.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this project to life. We’re proud to support a space that will strengthen recreation, connection, and community wellbeing in our region.

Avery Esford, Tristan Hopkins, and Madison Ingram are back at Cunningham Swan, this time as articling students.

After joining us as summer students in 2025, they have continued to bring the same strong work ethic, professionalism, and enthusiasm that made such a positive impression last year.

We’re lucky to have them back with us and look forward to supporting them through this next stage of their legal careers.

Artist Spotlight – June

We are delighted to feature the work of Henry Saxe, whose exhibition is on display in our lobby and BR1 throughout the month of June.

Born in Montreal and based in Tamworth, Ontario, Henry Saxe is an important Canadian artist whose work spans sculpture, painting, drawing, and printmaking. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas Award winner, and a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

Known for his complex metal sculptures and distinctive approach to form and movement, Saxe’s work invites viewers to consider materials, structure, and imagination in a new way.

We invite you to take some time during your visit to enjoy this special display.

Cunningham Swan is growing.

We are pleased to welcome two new Associate Lawyers to our Corporate and Business Law group this week: Sukhpreet Bhogiwal and Tayyaba Saleem.

Sukhpreet brings cross-border legal experience in U.S. immigration and tax law, with bar credentials in both Ontario and Michigan, a combination that adds valuable depth to our Corporate and Business Law group.

Tayyaba comes to us with in-house corporate counsel experience at Grasshopper Energy, a Canadian renewable energy developer, giving her a client-side perspective that will be valuable in her work with businesses.

We are excited to have both of them as part of the team and look forward to the energy and expertise they bring to our clients and the Kingston legal community.

Artist Spotlight – May

We’re pleased to feature Canadian landscape painter Thomas Tugnette, whose work will be exhibited in our office throughout the month of May.

Thomas creates pieces that invite stillness and presence. His work is inspired by moments from his youth spent immersed in nature, free from pressure and full of quiet reflection. His waterfall paintings, in particular, offer a space to pause, reset, and simply be.

We’re proud to support local artists and share their work with our community.
