🛑 Life Jacket Safety Check: Keeping Our Youngest Boaters Safe

During recent vessel checks on Lake Dalrymple, our team encountered three separate boats with children under 14 who did not have proper, usable life jackets.

In every single case, the operators were charged. More importantly, kids were left vulnerable on the water. Here is what we found—and what you need to know before you launch:

Case 1: The "Grow Into It" Myth

The Issue: A 9-year-old was wearing an Adult L/XL jacket.

The Danger: If a child falls in, an oversized jacket will slip right over their head. Life jackets must fit securely now, not later.

Case 2: The "Squeezing In" Risk

The Issue: A 14-year-old (over 100 lbs) was wearing a youth jacket that was far too small.

The Danger: A jacket that is too small won’t provide enough buoyancy to keep an older youth afloat. They required a Small/Medium adult size.

Case 3: The Vintage Cushion Hazard

The Issue: A boat had life jackets from the 90s that were torn, degraded, and being used as seat cushions.

The Danger: Sun, water, and sitting on life jackets ruins their buoyancy. If it’s torn or waterlogged, it’s no longer a life-saving device.

đź“‹ Your Pre-Launch Checklist:
Check the Label: Ensure the life jacket matches the wearer’s weight and size.

Do the T-Shirt Fit: Fasten the jacket. Pull up on the shoulders. If it moves up past the wearer's ears or nose, it’s too big.

Inspect the Condition: Check for rips, tears, functional buckles/zippers, and rot. If it's damaged, replace it.

⚠️ Remember: Having life jackets on board isn't enough if they don't fit or don't work. Let's make sure everyone returns to the dock safely.

There is always an assumption that it is the truck drivers fault.
Do you know how long it takes to stop a loaded trailer? A lot longer than a car! That’s the answer.
This trucker deserves a huge shout out for their quick thinking. They ditched the truck to save the life of whoever pulled out in front of them. This could have been a horribly tragic and most likely fatal accident. We all have busy lives and have places to be but pulling out in front of a tractor trailer is stupid.

Almaguin Highlands OPP are out this May long weekend conducting R.I.D.E. checks across the region.

Impaired driving, whether by alcohol or drugs continues to be a leading factor in serious and fatal collisions.
• Plan ahead
• Arrange a sober driver
• Call a taxi or rideshare
• Stay overnight if needed

Expect to be stopped. Checks are quick, but the consequences of impaired driving last a lifetime. Let’s keep our roads safe.

Drive sober. Stay safe. Arrive alive.

To the moms who birthed us, and the mom who didn’t but stepped into our lives to love us unconditionally, Happy Mothers Day

To the fur mommas who might not be able to have children, or do not want children, thank you for the late night emergency vet trips, the “spit it out” chase, and giving unconditional love to fur babies, Happy Mothers Day.

And as a more somber point, to those who have lost their moms, today is not a day of celebration but a day of mourning. Losing your mother is one of the hardest (if not the hardest) thing you will ever do in your life. Be kind to the people grieving. Let them have space if they need it. And invite them to share a memory about their mom.

May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 spirit People (MMIWG2S), widely known as Red Dress Day. It is a day to honor victims, support families, and demand action on the disproportionate violence against Indigenous women

The second photo is a dress created by Barrie artist Fiona Legg (now deceased). As she created this dress she tied each string, representing a woman who was reported missing. She said their name, she prayed for their safe return to their families. This was part of an installation with Jamie Black, the woman who has brought May 5 to the attention of the nation. This dress has been showcased all over the country and hung in museums in Ottawa.

If you see red dresses today, stop to think about the families who are searching for their loved ones, for the babies who lost their moms, for the parents who lost their daughters. Bring this awareness to light to hopefully stop the violence.

May 1st is First Responders Day in Ontario.

Today we recognize and remember all first responders who have risen to the call of duty to protect and serve their communities.

Please take a moment to thank a first responder today. They are the ones who are their on the worst days of our lives and see it every day, and then go home to their families and have to put those scary and heartbreaking situations aside to be their for the people who love and care for them.

I am blessed to have so many first responders in my life. All of them have strength beyond comprehension. They have a sense of duty and honor that cannot be explained. They never say no to a call to help fellow humans out.

Thank you to all first responders today. To the ones serving, to the ones who have served and to the ones who have given their lives to answer the call.
