North East Region OPP officers were out on Highway 69 near Parry Sound conducting focused radar and LIDAR speed enforcement, with members from North Bay Highway Safety Division (HSD), Sudbury HSD and the Parry Sound Detachment working together to promote road safety.

The initiative resulted in 56 charges, including four stunt driving charges. Speeds associated with the stunt driving enforcement included 144 km/h, 148 km/h and 149 km/h in posted 90 km/h zones.

Beyond the charges, increased police visibility along Highway 69 plays an important role in encouraging drivers to slow down and make safe decisions behind the wheel.

Des agents de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (Police provinciale) de la Région Nord-Est ont mené une opération ciblée de contrôle de la vitesse à l’aide de radars et de LIDAR sur l’autoroute 69, près de Parry Sound. Des membres de la Division de la sécurité de la circulation (HSD) de North Bay, de la HSD de Sudbury et du détachement de Parry Sound ont collaboré à cette initiative visant à promouvoir la sécurité routière.

L'initiative a mené au dépôt de 56 accusations, dont quatre pour des manœuvres périlleuses. Les vitesses associées aux infractions de conduite de manœuvres périlleuses comprenaient 144 km/h, 148 km/h et 149 km/h dans des zones où la limite était fixée à 90 km/h.

Au-delà des accusations, la présence policière accrue le long de l’autoroute 69 joue un rôle important pour encourager les conducteurs à ralentir et à prendre des décisions prudentes au volant.

The MNR has notified hunters with moose tags in WMU 5 or WMU 6 that they will not be permitted to use certain roads to reach lands where they plan to hunt moose. At the request of a local Indigenous community, portions of Segise Road, Portal Road, and Deer Lake Road are closed to access from September 26 to December 15, 2026, inclusive, under Section 28 of the Public Lands Act. Travel on these roads for other purposes is still permitted.

The MNR began contacting hunters on October 2, several days after the bows-only moose season opened in WMUs 5 and 6. The OFAH is asking the MNR to explain:
• The evidence used to justify these restrictions
• The impact on tag holders and their points
• The decision to use access restrictions over other management tools
• Why the decision was made after the opening of moose season
• How it plans to address the stated concerns of the Indigenous community

The OFAH is deeply concerned about the impact on moose hunters, the lack of transparency and public communication, and the precedent this sets for moose management. Travel restrictions should not become a preferred way to manage moose over the annual tag allocation process and established moose management direction, and decisions like these can’t be made behind closed doors.

The OFAH is working hard to protect moose hunting opportunities and make sure hunters’ voices are heard. Affected tag holders should contact the Kenora District MNR office immediately at 807-468-2501.

Check the weather!
Wearing a lifejacket significantly increases your chances of survival if you fall overboard. Ensure your vessel is equipped with the appropriate number of approved lifejackets or floater suits for all occupants.
Make sure your equipment and boat is in good working order.
Never boat impaired.
With less people around have your phone and safety equipment ready.

Today is a day of remembrance and learning.

On September 30th we are to listen to those who could not speak. We learn about the atrocities of residential schools. We learn of the many cultures that were silenced and forbid, losing a whole generation of children to trauma, abuse and death.

Canada was wrong. The Churches were wrong. The Government was wrong. But now more than ever we are learning to be accepting of other faiths and cultures, and trying to move towards a reconciliation with the Indigenous people who lost their culture.

The only way we can move forward is to learn the truth. Listen to their stories. Be empathetic towards their harsh upbringing, and learn from our mistakes. Without learning we are doomed to repeat the horrendous acts that took so many lives that are unaccounted for.

Truth and reconciliation will never bring the ones that were lost back, it will never bring closure to their families, it will never take away the trauma, but it will show our sincere commitment to never letting anything like that happen again. It will help unite and give the space to heal cultures and to hopefully have a younger generation of indigenous peoples want to learn about their history, about their customs and about their elders without fear.

Take today as a solemn day. Take today to remember all of the children who did not survive. All of the children maimed and injured. And to think about devastation that was caused by residential schools.

We’ve increased the speed limit to 110 km/h on Highway 400, making travel faster and more consistent for drivers in our community.
