Missing a court date is not always “just rescheduling.”

In Ontario, what happens next can depend on the type of matter.

Criminal case? Small Claims? Family Court? Tribunal hearing?

The consequences may be very different. Some matters can continue without the person who failed to appear.

Others may lead to default decisions, warrants, dismissals, or additional legal issues.

Court File: The Crown v. Mr. Loafington

Allegations:

• Missing mittens
• Missing beans
• Missing feet

Defence position:

“If the feet cannot be seen… they cannot be considered missing.”

The court remains unconvinced.

Mr. Loafington remains perfectly loafed and refuses further comment.

A little courtroom humour for the cat people and legal people.

Do you need a lawyer for Small Claims Court in Ontario?

Not always.

Small Claims Court was designed to be more accessible, and parties may represent themselves, hire a lawyer, or retain a licensed paralegal.

But “simpler” does not mean informal.

Rules, deadlines, evidence, and procedure still apply.

Ontario’s Small Claims Court now handles claims up to $50,000.

Small Claims Court in Ontario offers a simpler way to resolve civil disputes. This post outlines who can represent a party, including self-representation, lawyers, and licensed paralegals.

Defense counsel submits that the client was acting under the doctrine of zoomies.

The court notes:

• Sudden burst of energy
• Destroyed tennis ball
• One heavily chewed shoe
• Absolutely no regrets

The doctrine is not currently recognized in Canadian law. It is, however, widely recognized by dogs everywhere.

Court is now in session… and absolutely nobody is staying calm. 🦌⚖️

One side says: “My client was peacefully walking through the meadow.”

The other side says: “That was an aggressive stampede.”

Already questioning every life decision.

Legal reality… just with more antlers.

Private investigators are not police.

They do not have special powers.

They cannot ignore the law because “it’s an investigation.”

In Ontario, private investigators are licensed, regulated, and work within specific legal limits.

Their role is often to document facts, verify information, and gather evidence as part of a larger legal process.

Reality looks very different from the movies.

Private investigators in Ontario are licensed and regulated professionals, not law enforcement. This post explains what they do, when they are commonly used, and the legal limits that apply to private investigations.

Judge: “On what grounds are you objecting?”

Counsel:

“Everything.”

Some courtroom participants are more enthusiastic than others.

Could Canada regulate harmful online content without limiting freedom of expression?

That was one of the biggest questions behind Bill C-63, Canada’s proposed Online Harms Act.

The bill aimed to address issues such as child exploitation material, non-consensual images, online hate, and violent content.

Supporters called it overdue.

Critics warned about civil liberties and free expression. The bill never became law, but the debate is far from over.

Bill C-63, the proposed Online Harms Act, was introduced in Canada’s Parliament in 2024 to address harmful online content and platform accountability. The bill did not become law after Parliament was prorogued in January 2025, but the proposal sparked extensive debate about digital regulation and ...

Fast lawyer.

Simultaneous objections.

Three people talking at once.

Meanwhile the court reporter is somewhere between caffeine, concentration, and pure determination.

A little courtroom appreciation for the people quietly keeping the record alive.
