Do you have to stay in active treatment to keep receiving long-term disability benefits?

Generally, you must follow treatment that is reasonable, medically appropriate, accessible and likely to help. But that does not always mean endless physiotherapy, unaffordable therapy or treatment that your doctors say is no longer providing any benefit.

If your insurer says you are “not doing enough,” the answer depends on your medical evidence, prognosis, treatment options and ability to access care.

A traumatic amputation does not end when the wound heals.

Returning to work may require a person to manage chronic or phantom-limb pain, fatigue, reduced mobility, prosthetic discomfort and entirely new physical limitations. But the psychological trauma can be even more difficult. PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, altered self-image and fear of being treated differently can interfere with concentration, confidence, reliability and day-to-day workplace functioning.

A person may be physically capable of performing certain tasks and still be unable to return to work successfully or consistently.

When the combined physical and psychological effects of an amputation make sustained employment unrealistic, long-term disability benefits may provide essential financial protection. A failed return to work is not a personal failure—it may be evidence that the injury remains disabling.
