I recently reviewed my mother's car insurance renewal and had to point out to her how that her policy has materially changed effective this past summer. For policies entered into or renewed on or after July 1, 2026, medical, rehabilitation, and attendant-care benefits remain mandatory, while several other benefits, including income replacement, may depend on OPTIONAL coverage.

When you receive your policy renewal, take the extra time and read the extra notes and make sure that you have the coverage you need. If you are unsure, call your insurance broker and review your coverage.

What should you do if you have been involved in a serious vehicle accident, either in a car, motorcycle, truck, bicycle or pedestrian accident? The number on thing is to get to safety and seek medical attention. After that it's important to gather information and on of the easiest ways is to use your phone and take photos of the accident scene, the other driver's vehicle plates and their insurance slip. In Ontario, compensation refers to the financial support and damages you may be entitled to after a collision, helping you cover the financial costs of a traffic accident. Under Ontario law, your recovery typically comes from two parallel streams - Statutory Accident Benefits (SABS) and a tort claim against the at-fault driver.

E-bike riders, pedestrians, cyclists, passengers, and other road users can suffer injuries. Any incident in which the use, operation or condition of an e-bike contributes to an injury can potentially result in a claim. Another motor vehicle does not have to be involved.

Ontario has laws around power-assisted bicycles (PAB) which in brief are:
- Maximum 500-watt motor
- Maximum 32 km/h assisted speed
- Maximum 120 kg weight
- Working pedals
- Wheels at least 35 mm wide and 350 mm in diameter
- Required braking systems
- Motor and battery securely attached
- Properly insulated electrical terminals
- No illegal power or speed modifications

The e-bike must also be maintained in good working order. Riders must be at least 16 and wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet.

As of July 1, 2026, Ontario Regulation 383/24 amended the Statutory Accident Benefits being offered in your vehicle insurance. Medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care benefits remain mandatory, while income replacement, caregiver, housekeeping, non-earner, death, and funeral benefits are now OPTIONAL coverages that must be purchased and an extra under your policy. When your policy comes up for renewal take a minute to review what your coverage includes.
