I walked into a property. My analysis said $499,000 to $519,000. It was listed for $669,000. 🤯

How is there that much of a delta between two agents? There is a lack of honesty out there. A lack of willingness to have the hard conversation at the very start of a relationship.

Think about it this way. If you go see a new doctor — even though it is the first time you have met them — you expect the truth. You expect their honest analysis.

We all have the same comps. The data is not different for everyone. Telling someone what they want to hear is not a pricing strategy. 👇

How to Help Adult Kids Accept the Move
(Because sometimes the hardest part isn’t the move — it’s the conversation)
When seniors decide to downsize, simplify, or move into a more manageable home, the reaction that catches them off guard isn’t their own emotions — it’s their adult children’s.
Some kids take it beautifully.
Others… well, they need a minute.
And that’s normal.
This isn’t just about bricks and mortar — the family home holds decades of memories, traditions, routines, and identity. Even if your kids haven’t lived there in 20 or 30 years, many still feel tied to it.
Here’s how to help them accept your decision without guilt, conflict, or emotional landmines.

Start With the Truth: This Move Is About Your Well-Being
A lot of adult children assume a downsizing decision is “too fast,” “too drastic,” or “not necessary.”
You can help bring them onboard by explaining:
what’s becoming harder to manage
why now is the right time
how you want more comfort, not less
that making this choice now gives you more control, not less
When they understand your why, the conversation softens instantly.

Acknowledge Their Feelings Without Absorbing Their Stress
Sometimes adult children get emotional because:
they’re worried about you
they’re surprised
they’re trying to protect the past
they’re overwhelmed by logistics
they didn’t see it coming
You don’t need to “fix” their reactions.
You just acknowledge them.
Something simple like:
“I know this brings up a lot of memories for you. It does for me too. But this move is going to make life easier for me — and that’s important.”
Acknowledgement reduces resistance.

Give Them Time to Adjust — But Don’t Hand Over the Steering Wheel
Kids often want time to get used to the idea. That’s fair.
But sometimes they slide into a role where they want to dictate:
when you move
where you move
what you should keep
what you should throw out
whether they “approve” of the plan
This is your life, your financial decisions, and your wellbeing.
Involving them is healthy.
Letting them take over is not.

Invite Them Into the Process (but Set Boundaries)
Adult children usually come around faster when they feel included.
You can involve them by:
asking for opinions on neighbourhoods
showing them listings you’re considering
letting them help with decluttering
giving them first pick of sentimental items
inviting them to the new building or community
But make the boundaries clear:
“I want your input — not your permission.”
This keeps everyone aligned and respectful.

Let Them Grieve the House — It’s Not About You
Even grown kids need to process the loss of:
childhood bedrooms
Christmas mornings
family routines
the neighbourhood “back drop”
It’s not a sign they don’t support you.
It’s simply nostalgia.
If they need to walk the property one last time, take photos, or visit before the move — let them. It helps them close the chapter.

Show Them How This Move HELPS the Family
Sometimes adult children think downsizing is a burden.
Often it’s the opposite.
Explain how the move:
reduces their worry about your safety
means fewer rushed repairs, emergencies, or snow-clearing “SOS” calls
prevents future crises (like being forced to move suddenly)
gives you a more manageable lifestyle
frees you to enjoy social activities, travel, or hobbies
removes the pressure on them to manage a large home later
Most kids feel relief once they see the bigger picture.

Talk About the New Lifestyle You’re Creating
Paint the picture for them:
closer to amenities
easier to maintain
more social opportunities
safer building
accessible layout
less stress day-to-day
When they see the benefit rather than the loss, acceptance comes naturally.

If They’re Struggling, Bring in a Neutral Third Party
Some families need an extra voice — and that’s okay.
This might be:
your real estate agent
a downsizing specialist
your lawyer
your doctor
a trusted family friend
Sometimes hearing information from a neutral source reduces the emotional charge.

The Bottom Line
Your adult children love you — that’s why they react.
But this move is about your comfort, your future, and your independence.
When you guide them through the reasons, include them where it helps, and set the right boundaries, most families come around quickly. Often, the move ends up being a gift: less worry for them, and more freedom for you.

If you’re planning a move and want help navigating these family conversations, I can walk you through the process, outline what to expect, and help make this a smooth transition for everyone involved.
