🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Today, we pause to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, their families and Indigenous communities who continue to carry the impacts.
Here in Nova Scotia, we live and work in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq.
Truth and reconciliation require listening, learning and taking the time to better understand the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
The beautiful piece we’re sharing today brings together the work of two local Mi’kmaw businesses. Laughing Rose Creations by Kayla Johnson, a granddaughter of a residential school Survivor, hand-beaded this medallion to honour her family members who were Survivors, incorporating an Every Child Matters pin from Hepworth Design Co., a Mi’kmaw family business based in Millbrook First Nation.
Today, we encourage our community to reflect, listen to Indigenous voices, continue learning and support Mi’kmaw artists and businesses in our communities.
