No one talks about executor burnout.

But it’s real.

Being an executor doesn’t happen in a calm, organized moment.
It starts during grief.

And from that moment, you’re expected to step into a role that is:
• Administrative
• Financial
• Legal
• Emotional
All at once.

You’re making funeral arrangements
while trying to locate documents.

You’re fielding questions from family
while dealing with banks and the Canada Revenue Agency.

You’re managing expectations
while navigating a process you’ve likely never done before.

And it doesn’t end in a few weeks.

It can take 12–18+ months to fully administer an estate.

What many people don’t realize is this:
An executor isn’t just helping out.
They are taking on a fiduciary role with legal responsibility.

That means:
• You can make mistakes
• You can be held accountable
• You are expected to get it right

This role combines emotional stress with legal responsibility.
That’s a difficult combination.

Most executors don’t need more pressure.
- They need structure.
- They need clarity.
- They need support.

If you’re planning your estate, this is something you can give them.

If you’re an executor, this is something you deserve.

Michael Cochrane's 'Building the perfect Bonfire' Law360 article on Supreme Court of Canada | Cour suprême du Canada decision in Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia and how it may alter breakdown proceedings.
