⚠️ Fraud Alert: Rental Scam Reported
We've been made aware of a scam involving a property listed for sale being falsely advertised as a rental on Facebook Marketplace.
In one reported case, a prospective renter contacted the real estate agent listed on the property after being asked to pay a $100 application fee. The agent confirmed the property was for sale only and had never been listed for rent, indicating the rental advertisement was fraudulent.
Please be cautious when responding to rental listings online:
✅ Verify that the property is legitimately available for rent
✅ Be wary of anyone requesting money before a viewing or signed agreement
✅ Confirm you're dealing directly with the owner, property manager, or a licensed real estate professional
✅ Trust your instincts if something doesn't seem right
Unfortunately, scams like this often target people who are urgently searching for housing.
Anyone who believes they have been affected should contact the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) or their local police service to report the incident.
