La Clinique juridique de l’UNB est une clinique d’enseignement offrant un soutien juridique accessible aux personnes à faible revenu. Located in a historic downtown Fredericton residence, the UNB Legal Clinic is a vital community resource that helps improve access to justice in New Brunswick. Our mission is to bridge gaps in the legal aid system by providing legal assistance and representation to
individuals who may not otherwise be able to afford legal services. The UNB Legal Clinic operates as a premier teaching clinic where the next generation of legal professionals translates legal theory into meaningful community action. Legal services are primarily delivered by third-year UNB Law students who are completing the final stage of their Juris Doctor (JD) degrees. These student practitioners work directly with clients while gaining practical experience. Students do not work independently. Each client file is closely supervised by a licensed Lawyer, who carefully reviews all work, including legal research, advice, and documentation. With leadership experience in poverty law and community legal clinic management, the Clinic provides assistance that meets high professional and ethical standards. Who is eligible for our services? Our services are available to individuals who:
• Receive income assistance.
• Have little or no income.
• Are earning minimum wages. Please note: Potential clients must meet the Clinic’s financial eligibility requirements to be considered for our services. What can the UNB Legal Clinic help you with?
• Employment Law
Issues such as dismissal (with or without cause), unpaid wages or benefits, and human rights concerns related to employment.
• Housing and Tenant Matters
Evictions, unreasonable rent increases, loss of essential services or utilities, and other tenant-related concerns.
• Human Rights
Explaining legal rights, conducting research, and assisting with the human rights complaint process.
• Notary and Commissioning Services
Notarizing and commissioning documents when required.
• Immigration and refugee Assistance
Helping with forms related to asylum claims, temporary work permits, and permanent residence or citizenship applications.
• Provincial Offences (Tickets)
Representation in Provincial Court as agents for offences under provincial legislation (such as speeding tickets).
• Social Benefits
Assistance with issues involving Income Assistance, Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), Employment Insurance (EI), and appeals, including matters related to CERB overpayments.
• Small Claims
Helping clients pursue claims of up to $20,000, including disputes involving unpaid money, defective products, unpaid work, or certain landlord disputes.
• Uncontested Divorce
Assisting with the preparation and filing of forms for uncontested divorces where there are no additional issues. How It Works
If your legal issue falls within our scope of services, here is how you can get in touch with us. Applicants will be asked to complete an intake form and provide proof of identification, proof of income, and any documents supporting their matter. Once we receive your information, our law students will review and research your matter to determine whether the Clinic is able to proceed with your case. If your matter falls within our scope and we have the capacity to assist, we will contact you regarding the next steps in the process. The Clinic is staffed by law students working under the supervision of the Clinic Director and a Supervising Lawyer. Our ability to accept new files depends on several factors, including student availability, the complexity of the matter, and the Clinic's resources. Therefore, we reserve the right to close the intake form or decline new applications if our waitlist reaches capacity. All files are reviewed at each stage of the process and may be declined, in whole or in part, at the Clinic Director's discretion. While we aim to assist as many individuals as possible, the Clinic’s capacity is limited, and priority will be given to active files.
