Great news for the local lobster industry!
Lobster fishing is at the heart of Nova Scotiaβs economy, and with being known worldwide for the quality of our products, we need to make strategic investments to keep our reputation as the number one producer of lobster in the world.
Today, I announced a contribution of $400,000 from the Atlantic Fisheries Fund to help the Maritime Fishermenβs Union deliver on a project to its members that will improve the quality, and the value, of our lobster.
This funding will be used to help the industry along the Southeastern Northumberland Strait (MFU Local 4), Eastern Cape Breton (MFU Local 6) and Southwest Nova Scotia (MFU Local 9) by installing canopy extensions to create more shade, lobster sorting tables, and automatic lobster banders.
Additionally, live-well systems with the ability to measure water quality, will be installed or upgraded on vessels to ensure that the product we produce reflects the consistent quality that our international consumers expect.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to join us this morning as we continue to take the necessary steps to grow our economy here at home.
