Good vision can shape so many parts of everyday life: learning, working, staying independent, and participating fully in community.

In 2025 the Field Law Community Fund Program supported Closing the Eye Gap, helping expand access to critical eye care through programs focused on preventing avoidable blindness and restoring sight. The funding contributes to community-led solutions that make vision care more accessible to people who need it most.

Sometimes, impact starts with something as simple, and important, as helping someone see clearly.

One of the key takeaways from our recent People, Pets + Parking webinar was the importance of defining a condominium project before obtaining quotes or hiring a contractor. Clearly defining the scope of work, project goals, budget, and priorities helps avoid misunderstandings, change orders, and costly disputes later. Investing time in planning upfront can save significant time and money down the road.

Not every dispute belongs in a lien action.

A recent Saskatchewan decision reinforces an important principle: while parties may be able to bring counterclaims in lien proceedings, those claims must be closely connected to the work or improvement giving rise to the lien. Unrelated disputes can undermine the summary nature of lien actions and may not be permitted to proceed.

Anthony Burden explores what this decision could mean for contractors, owners, and others involved in construction disputes, with research and support from our summer student, Dylan Taylor.

Workplace misconduct is not always malicious. Sometimes it starts with an employee trying to help someone they know.

In a recent Alberta decision, the Court upheld a just cause termination where a senior employee repeatedly shared confidential information with his son, collaborated on patented technology without authorization, and failed to properly disclose a conflict of interest.

The decision is a reminder that senior employees have heightened obligations to protect confidential information, avoid conflicts of interest, and comply with workplace policies. It also highlights the importance of clear policies and consistent enforcement when misconduct arises.

A fresh start after recovery often comes with a long to-do list and finances can be one of the hardest parts to untangle.

Debt. Missed taxes. Budgeting. Starting over.

That’s where Project UpSkill comes in.

Created by students through Enactus SAIT, Project UpSkill helps people in addiction recovery build financial confidence through practical, one-on-one financial literacy support and workshops focused on real life: managing debt, budgeting, saving, and planning for what comes next. The program works alongside recovery centres to help participants build stability beyond treatment and feel more prepared for life after recovery.

As a recipient of the Field Law Community Fund Program’s Next Gen Award, this student-led idea is helping turn financial stress into practical steps forward. 💙

Summer events, bookings, contests, mailing lists, online registrations. For many tourism, hospitality, and event businesses, peak season also means peak data collection.

The challenge? Just because you can collect personal information doesn't mean you should.

In our latest Legally Speaking article for the Rocky Mountain Outlook, Richard Stobbe and Austin Ward discussed common privacy pitfalls businesses face during busy seasons, including overcollection of personal information, unclear consent practices, outdated privacy policies, and reliance on third-party booking and marketing platforms.

A few simple questions can go a long way:
✔️ Do you really need all the information you're collecting?
✔️ Is it clear why you're collecting it and how it will be used?
✔️ Do you know where that information is stored and who has access to it?

As customer interactions increase, privacy obligations remain the same. Taking the time to review your processes now can help avoid issues later.

We have a wonderful tradition at Field Law of celebrating career milestones and recognizing the people who help shape our firm.

Each year, colleagues come together to honour team members reaching significant service anniversaries, reflect on the years we've shared, and celebrate the relationships, achievements, and memories built along the way.

We're sharing a special moment from yesterday, when our Calgary Wills, Estates + Trusts team dressed in blue to celebrate Judy's 10-year and Jenn's 20-year anniversaries with Field Law.

Milestones like these are a reminder that a great workplace is built by great people. Thank you, Judy and Jenn, for your dedication, expertise, and the positive impact you've made on your clients, colleagues, and our firm over the years.

Congratulations on this incredible achievement. We look forward to celebrating many more milestones together. 💙
