I offer my condolences to the family of the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, KC on his passing. He was an excellent lawyer who served his community and the federal Conservative Party with distinction. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada by the late prime minister, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney.

Don was a trailblazer who pursued the cause justice and equality with vigour and determination. I thank him for his many years of meritorious service to Nova Scotia and Canada.

May he Rest in Perfect Peace.

From Celebrating the Judicial Legacy of one of the finest jurists of our time, The Hon. Russell Brown formerly of the Supreme Court of Canada. To welcoming my mother, sister and brother to Canada, as well as other family members and friends from around the world for a historic celebration. To having three Alberta Justice Ministers in one photograph (perhaps historic as far as I know) to attending the best outdoor event in the world, The Calgary Stampede with my daughters. And finally attending the John Ware Institute Gala at the Calgary Petroleum Club, the months of June and July have been exceedingly rewarding.

I thank the John Ware Institute for all they do to ensure opportunity for all in the corporate boardroom. In particular I thank the founder, Akolisa (Ako) Ufodike PhD FCPA for his leadership.

Remember talents exist everywhere. Second, developing and nurturing relationships and partnerships are important. Third, if we don’t build or do it for ourselves, no one would.

I am grateful to Black Law Students' Association of Canada for their invitation to participate in the 2025 Annual National Conference Gala in Calgary. I attended with my two daughters, caught up with my niece who is the McGill Black Law Students Association president, and got the chance to connect with old and new friends.

I am incredibly proud of the and its leadership for putting together this successful conference. I could count the number of black law students across this country when I came here as an immigrant from Nigeria 20 years ago. In that time, tremendous progress has been made by our communities through thoughtful and strategic leadership across Canada, from coast to coast to coast. Many have had to endure extreme hardship, difficulties, institutional discrimination, racism and ultimately paid the price for these incremental progress.

It is therefore a really profound and proud moment to see hundreds of young black law students from across this nation gather in the beautiful city of Calgary. A reminder to us all of the time tested truth: if we don’t do it for ourselves, no one would.

To Black Law Students' Association of Canada leadership, volunteers and sponsors - thank you.

I look forward to their amazing future in the practice of law.

I offer my heartfelt congratulations to the newly appointed Justices of the Alberta Court of Justice, including my dearest wife, The Honourable Justice Emem Madu. They are exceptional and great addition to the court. I wish them the absolute best as they begin their judicial career.

Our family are incredibly thrilled at the historic appointment of Justice Madu. Justice Madu is arguably the most brilliant legal mind I know. Having been law school classmates, I witnessed her legal education and career first hand from the first day of law school to this day: from narrowly missing a First Class in law from our alma mater, the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG) , to achieving a First Class from the Nigerian Law School, to becoming a law professor at our alma mater, working at one of the biggest law firms in Nigeria and Alberta and obtaining a Master of Laws (LLM) from the Univeristy of Alberta, to the brilliant, astute and compassionate lawyer she is today. Justice Madu has always been exceptional and aim for the very best. I have no doubt that she will bring the same excellence to bear on all matters before her and the court. The Alberta Court of Justice is so lucky to have Justice Madu.

From our family - our children: Ugonna, Chisom, Adanaya, and me - we are super proud of you and wish you God’s abiding blessings.
Congratulations!

As we near the end of 2024 at midnight today, I want to wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. My sincerest and absolute best wishes for you, your families and loved ones in 2025.

Always remember that, we have every reason to give thanks for His many blessings in 2024, while undertanding that trials, betrayals, persecutions and tribulations will always come our way in different form and shape. When they do come: Confront them. Be yourself. Be resilient. Be principled. Never give in to evil.

Blessed and Prosperous New Year to all.
