This Victoria Day long weekend, I encourage everyone to drive safely while traveling on the highways. D
The unfortunate part of my job as a personal injury lawyer is hearing the stories of individuals and families whose lives have been ruined by negligent drivers. Here are some tips to help keep you safe.

1. Be patient. Do not pass vehicles on the highway unless it is safe to do so.
2. Do not drive intoxicated.
3. Have respect for other drivers.
4. If you are tired, pull over to a safe area and catch a nap.
5. Pay attention to other vehicles on the roadway and be prepared to take action if a collision is about to occur. Passive inattention can cause you to lose critical seconds of reaction time.
6. Do not drive excessively fast.
7. Make sure your vehicle is in proper driving condition. Check your tires for proper inflation, tread depth, and any damage.
8. Respect speed limits in construction areas.
9. Ensure young children are properly restrained in child seats.
10. Stay off your cell phone and for heaven’s sake NO TEXTING WHILE DRIVING!

Alberta civil trial lawyers push back against care-first and no-fault insurance reforms

Jillian Gamez, ACTLA chair, notes that the primary causes of increased insurance costs are major weather catastrophes, increasing claim costs due to inflation, rising healthcare expenses, vehicular thefts -- not litigation and legal costs. The source is the Alberta superintendent of insurance’s own 2024 annual report.

“Albertans do not believe that affordability [by removing the right to sue] should come at the expense of those who can least afford it -- innocent victims with permanent, lifelong injuries,” Gamez said.

This holiday season, I encourage everyone to drive safely while traveling on the highways. Do not drink and drive. The unfortunate part of my job as a personal injury lawyer is hearing the stories of individuals and families whose lives have been ruined by negligent drivers. Here are some tips to help keep you safe.
1. Be patient. Do not pass vehicles on the highway unless it is safe to do so.
2. Check your tires for cuts and cracks. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Winter tires provide better grip when temperatures dip below 7°C. The tread depth on winter tires should be more than 4 mm (5/32 inch).
3. Do not drive intoxicated.
4. Have respect for other drivers.
5. If you are tired, pull over to a safe area and catch a nap.
6. Pay attention to other vehicles on the roadway and be prepared to take action if a collision is about to occur. Passive inattention can cause you to lose critical seconds of reaction time.
