05/04/2026

Canada has announced progress on the In-Canada Workers Initiative, aimed at accelerating permanent residence for eligible workers already contributing to the economy.

Key clarification:
No new immigration pathway has been announced. This update focuses on faster processing of existing PR applications already in the system.

What’s happening:
IRCC is prioritizing certain applications from current work permit holders who have already applied for PR.

Who is included:
Eligible individuals are those who:
β€’ Are currently in Canada on valid work permits
β€’ Working in an in-demand sector/occupation
β€’ Have already submitted a PR application
β€’ Have been living in Canada (including rural/smaller communities) for 2+ years
β€’ Applied through existing programs such as PNP, AIP, caregiver pilots, community pilots, or Agri-Food Pilot

What this means:
βœ” No new intake or new stream
βœ” Faster processing of existing applications
βœ” Focus on workers already established in Canada
βœ” Support for labour needs in rural and smaller communities

IRCC will continue updating progress on this initiative monthly.

Canada Immigration Reform – Express Entry 2026 Updates

Canada is moving toward a more streamlined and economically focused Express Entry system designed to better match skilled talent with labour market needs.

πŸ”Ή Key Proposed Changes:
β€’ Merge the three Federal High Skilled programs into one streamlined program
β€’ Simplify eligibility criteria (language, education, and work experience)
β€’ Remove overlapping intake controls such as the FSW points grid
β€’ Recalibrate the CRS to better reflect real labour market success
β€’ Eliminate or refine weaker scoring factors, including spousal points
β€’ Strengthen focus on high-wage occupations and Canadian work experience
β€’ Introduce enhanced recognition for Canadian licensure and Red Seal trades
β€’ Prioritize β€œpractice-ready” skilled tradespersons and regulated professionals

πŸ”Ή What This Means for Applicants:
The system will increasingly favour candidates with:
βœ” Strong official language ability
βœ” Relevant Canadian experience
βœ” Licensed or regulated professional status
βœ” High-demand, high-wage occupations

These reforms aim to reduce complexity, improve system integrity, and prioritize candidates with the highest potential to contribute to Canada’s economy.

🚨 Important Update on Canada’s New TR to PR Pathway

In a recent interview, Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab confirmed a major shift in the upcoming TR to PR pathway for 2026–2027.

Watch full video: https://youtu.be/J8KmDCkvgJY?si=GMf4neoy98gVXPEm

❗ Key Highlights:
β€’ Temporary workers in major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal will NOT be eligible
β€’ The program will exclude all Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) β€” Canada’s largest urban centres
β€’ Approximately 33,000 PR spots will be available over 2 years
β€’ Priority will be given to workers with Canadian experience, especially in rural and smaller communities

πŸ“ CMAs also include cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Winnipeg β€” meaning the focus is clearly shifting away from major urban hubs.
Find out if your area is a CMA using the official list from Statistics Canada https://www.statcan.gc.ca/en/subjects/standard/daily/5000076

πŸ’‘ Why this matters:
Canada is actively redirecting immigration to support regional growth and labour shortages outside big cities.

⏳ More details on eligibility and criteria are expected in the coming weeks.

πŸ‘‰ If you're a temporary worker in Canada, your location and occupation could play a crucial role in your PR pathway.
