“The injunction that was issued appeared to be incredibly over-broad, capturing people it was not intended to capture.” Sutherland told Postmedia.
On Monday morning I appeared in defence of counter protesters and innocent bystanders who were arrested and remanded over the weekend as a result of a court injunction issued by the Court of Queen's Bench.
This injunction, theoretically designed to give police broad powers in upholding municipal bylaws to prevent gridlocks from protests, was weaponized against individuals who did not fall into the scope of the injunction.
Over-broad powers such as these, especially where they carry the risk of detention without the possibility of timely bail, cannot be justified in a free and democratic society.
See what I've been working on here:
Two of the four people released were counter-protesters, according to their lawyers. Only one was a member of the "freedom rally."
