FAQ Friday: Answers to the questions we hear most.

This week’s question: How do I know if I have a case?

It’s one of the most common questions we get, and one of the hardest to answer without understanding the details.

In general, if you’ve been injured and someone else may have been at fault, there’s a good chance it’s worth looking into.

But it’s not always obvious.

Sometimes symptoms take time to develop. Sometimes fault isn’t clear right away. And sometimes people assume their situation isn’t serious enough to matter.

The only way to know for sure is to have a conversation.

A free consultation is an opportunity to ask questions, understand your options, and get a clearer sense of where you stand.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

When you’re dealing with a serious injury, experience isn’t just a bonus. It matters!

Rick Mallett has spent more than 35 years representing injured Albertans, helping thousands of clients navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

He’s a former President of the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association and has been recognized by Best Lawyers since 2021.

That experience shows up in how cases are prepared, how insurers are dealt with, and how outcomes are pursued.

At Hammer Injury Law, it’s about bringing that level of focus and experience to every file.

After a motor vehicle accident, most people are focused on getting through the next few days.

Medical appointments. Pain. Missed work. Trying to make sense of what just happened.

What often gets overlooked is how important those early decisions can be.

Getting medical care right away. Keeping records. Being careful about what you say to insurance companies. Understanding your rights before you act.

These aren’t just small details. They can shape how your claim unfolds and what your recovery looks like long-term.

We’ve put together a guide based on what we’ve seen helping injured Albertans over the years.

It walks through what matters early, what to avoid, and how to protect yourself after an accident.

FAQ Friday: Answers to the questions we hear most.

This week’s question: What does “no win, no fee” actually mean?

In simple terms, it means you don’t pay legal fees unless your case is successful.

At Hammer Injury Law, we work on a contingency basis. That means our fees are tied to the outcome of your claim, not upfront retainers or hourly billing.

If there is a recovery, our fee is a percentage of that amount. If there isn’t, you don’t pay legal fees.

For many people, this makes it easier to explore their options without worrying about the cost of getting started.

It also means we’re aligned with you. We’re focused on building a strong claim and working toward the best possible outcome.

May 17–23 is EMS Week, and this year’s theme is Improving Outcomes, Together.

At Hammer Injury Law, we see how important those first moments after an injury can be. EMS professionals are often the first on scene, making critical decisions, providing care, and helping stabilize patients during some of the most uncertain moments of their lives.

Their work doesn’t always get recognized, but it has a lasting impact. It’s the difference in how a recovery begins, how a family experiences a crisis, and how a situation unfolds in those early stages.

Behind every call is skill, training, and a level of compassion that stays with people long after the moment has passed.

We’re grateful for the work EMS professionals do across Alberta and the role they play in caring for our communities.

Thank you for what you do.

FAQ Friday: Answers to the questions we hear most.

This week’s question: What kinds of injuries are common in motor vehicle accident claims?

After a collision, not every injury is obvious right away.

Some of the most common injuries we see include whiplash and other soft tissue injuries, back and neck pain, concussions, and shoulder or knee injuries. In more serious cases, there can be fractures, spinal cord injuries, or traumatic brain injuries.

What many people don’t realize is that symptoms can take time to appear. What feels like stiffness or soreness in the days after an accident can develop into something more significant.

If you’ve been injured, even if it doesn’t seem severe at first, it’s worth paying attention to how you’re feeling and getting the right medical advice.

Understanding your situation early can make a difference in both your recovery and your options moving forward.

When someone chooses to come back to the same lawyer after a serious situation, it says a lot about the experience they had.

We’re grateful to V. Kirchner for sharing this:

“I first met Rick when my husband had a motorcycle injury, so when I needed a lawyer it was an easy choice. Working with Rick Mallett has been a pleasure from beginning to end. He’s professional, empathetic, personable and knowledgeable. Rick worked hard to ensure that nothing was left on the table. I highly recommend him!”

Thank you for your trust and for taking the time to share your experience.

May 11–17 is National Nursing Week, and this year’s theme is The Power of Nurses to Transform Health.

At Hammer Injury Law, we see firsthand the role nurses play in helping people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

After a serious injury, it’s often nurses who are there day in and day out. Providing care, offering reassurance, and helping patients and families navigate the road to recovery.

Their work goes far beyond treatment. It’s advocacy, compassion, and steady support when it’s needed most.

We’re grateful for the care they provide to our clients and to communities across Alberta.

Thank you to all nurses for the impact you make every day.
