Before you pay that traffic ticket, read this!

As of March 13, 2026, Alberta updated the penalty schedule under the Traffic Safety Act, meaning many traffic violations now carry higher fines.

Most speeding penalties increased between 8%-25%, while some high-risk offences increased by up to 50%‼️

Examples of updated fines include:
• 10 km/h over: $110 → $120
• 20 km/h over: $175 → $190
• 30 km/h over: $249 → $324
• 40 km/h over: $373 → $467
• 50 km/h over: $495 → $620

• Careless driving / racing / stunting: $473 → $710

• Distracted driving: $300 → $325

• Driving without a valid licence: $324 → $351

• Driving without a registration: $324 → $527

• Seatbelt violation: $162 → $211

• In construction or emergency zones, fines can be even higher, 30 km/h over: $499 → $540+

• Speeding 51 km/h or more over the limit still requires a mandatory court appearance.

With penalties increasing across Alberta, it's important to understand your options before paying a ticket, as it can lead to demerit points and insurance increases.

At The Ticket Bureau, we help drivers review their tickets and understand their options before court or resolution. ⚖️
