CFM partner, Joe Fiorante Q.C., spoke with CBC News about the heartbreaking testimony from family members of passengers killed in the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. The testimony is part of an ongoing criminal trial in the Netherlands against four men accused of having played key roles in missile strike. A new settlement has been reached in the Canadian Linear Resistors class action.

Kamaya Electric Co., Ltd. and Kamaya, Inc.. (collectively “Kamaya”) has agreed to pay CAD $770,000 for the benefit of Settlement Class Members and to provide meaningful early co-operation to the plaintiffs in pursuing their claims against the non-settling defendants.

A proposed class action lawsuit seeking damages on behalf of British Columbians who were the subject of a “birth alert” was filed today in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Birth alerts are notifications issued to hospitals regarding pregnant persons, which require the hospitals to contact child protection authorities whenever a subject pregnant person’s infant is delivered.

The action alleges that, by establishing and operating the birth alerts system, the Defendant has breached subject pregnant persons’ privacy as well as their fundamental constitutional rights—including their right to liberty and security of the person, and the right to equality.

This action is brought on behalf of members of a proposed class consisting of all persons who were, while pregnant, the subject of a birth alert issued in B.C. between the date that the Defendant began issuing birth alerts and the date of the certification of this action as a class proceeding (i.e. any person who has been subject to a birth alert issued in British Columbia to date).
