⚖️ CAN YOU REPRESENT YOURSELF IN COURT?

Yes! In Ontario, you generally have the right to represent yourself in court.

But just because you can doesn’t always mean you should. 😉
Court procedures, deadlines, evidence, and legal arguments can be complicated — and having someone who understands the process can make a stressful situation much easier to navigate.
Depending on your matter, a licensed paralegal may be able to represent you and help you understand your options.

At Small Town Paralegal, we’re here to help you understand the process and decide what kind of legal support is right for you.
📩 When in doubt, ask questions before you head to court!

Happy Wednesday, welcoming this new day with a little personal update🤍

I wanted to share some news from both my business and personal life — I will soon be welcoming baby number 4 🍼

This is such a special time for my family, and it also means I will be taking some much-needed time away from the office to focus on rest, recovery, and our newest little addition.

Small Town Paralegal will continue to run smoothly during this time. Danielle will be in the office and available to assist with all ongoing and new matters, ensuring clients continue to receive the support and service they need.

I am incredibly grateful for the trust and understanding of my clients as I take this time for my family. Building this business has always been about balance — advocating for others while also being present for my own family life. I am incredibly thankful to have Danielle on our team to run everything while I am away. While I am away, Small Town Paralegal will continue to run as it always has, with the only difference my first ever time off to be present with my baby instead of heading right back into the office.

Thank you for your continued support, kindness, and patience during this exciting chapter 🤍

⚖️ SMALL CLAIMS COURT & PARALEGALS — DID YOU KNOW?

If you have a dispute that falls within the jurisdiction of Ontario’s Small Claims Court, you don’t necessarily have to navigate the process alone.

A licensed paralegal can assist with many aspects of a Small Claims Court matter, including:
📌 Preparing and filing court documents
📌 Serving documents
📌 Preparing your evidence and organizing your case
📌 Representing you at court appearances
📌 Negotiating or assisting with settlement
📌 Preparing for a settlement conference or trial
📌 Helping with enforcement after judgment

Small Claims Court is designed to be more accessible than higher courts, but that doesn’t mean the process is always simple.
Understanding the Rules, meeting deadlines, presenting evidence properly, and knowing what you need to prove can make a big difference.

At Small Town Paralegal, we help clients navigate their Small Claims Court matters with practical guidance and representation.
🏡 Small-town service. Professional legal support.

⚖️ WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ENFORCE A JUDGMENT?

Winning your case in Small Claims Court is a big step — but what happens if the other party still doesn’t pay?
That’s where enforcement comes in.

A judgment is a court order that says money is owed to you. If the debtor doesn’t voluntarily pay, there are legal steps available to try to collect what you’re owed.
Depending on the circumstances, enforcement can include things like:
💰 Garnishment — taking money from certain sources, such as wages or a bank account.
🏠 Writ of seizure and sale — placing a writ against the debtor’s personal property or land, subject to the applicable rules and exemptions.
📋 Examination hearing — requiring the debtor to provide information about their financial circumstances and ability to pay.
The important thing to remember is that a judgment and collecting a judgment are two different things.
Getting the judgment is one step. Knowing how to properly enforce it is another.

At Small Town Paralegal, we can help you understand the enforcement options that may be available for your Small Claims Court judgment.
⚖️ Won your case? Don’t forget about the next step.

⚖️ WHAT HAPPENS AT A SETTLEMENT CONFERENCE?

If you have a Small Claims Court settlement conference coming up, you might be wondering what to expect.

A settlement conference is an opportunity for the parties to:
📌 Discuss the issues in the claim
📌 Identify what is agreed upon — and what is still disputed
📌 Discuss the evidence and strengths and weaknesses of each side
📌 Explore whether the matter can be settled without going to trial
📌 Discuss what happens next if a settlement cannot be reached

The goal isn’t necessarily to “win” the conference. It’s to have a productive discussion about the dispute and see whether there is a way to resolve it.
And remember — settling a case is not the same as giving up. Sometimes a good settlement is simply a practical way to bring a dispute to an end without the time, stress and expense of a trial.

At Small Town Paralegal, we can help you prepare for your settlement conference and understand what to expect.

⚖️ Know your options. Know your rights.

🤯 DID YOU KNOW THIS IS AN ONTARIO LAW?!

In Ontario, you can’t legally drag a dead horse down Yonge Street on a Sunday. 🐴😂

Okay… there’s a little more history behind this one. Laws like this come from older municipal bylaws and legislation that regulated everything from public behaviour to the movement of animals.

It’s a great reminder that Ontario’s laws have some very interesting history!

🏠 2027 RENT INCREASE

The Government of Ontario has announced that the 2027 rent increase guideline is 1.9%.

For landlords planning to increase rent in 2027, remember:
📌 An N1 Notice of Rent Increase must be provided to the tenant.
📌 Tenants must receive at least 90 days’ notice of the rent increase.
📌 Generally, rent cannot be increased more than once every 12 months — either 12 months after the last rent increase or, where applicable, 12 months after the tenant first moved in.
📌 The guideline applies to most residential rental units, although there are exceptions.

Planning a rent increase? Make sure you’re following the proper notice requirements — because when it comes to rent increases, timing matters!
