Canmore has officially joined the push to secure its place on Alberta’s proposed Calgary–Banff passenger rail corridor.

Council voted September 1 to direct Mayor Sean Krausert to advocate for a passenger rail stop in Canmore as the province continues planning the potential service.

465 hectares targeted for wildfire & habitat work

A major new phase of wildfire mitigation is about to begin along Canmore’s south boundary. Starting September 14, crews will begin the final phase of the Bow Valley Community Fireguard, stretching from the Rundle Forebay toward Pigeon Mountain and Dead Man’s Flats.

About 465 hectares are slated for fireguard and wildlife-habitat treatments. Residents should expect visible changes to the forest, heavy equipment and temporary trail closures as work progresses.

ARREST CAUGHT ON VIDEO IN DOWNTOWN CANMORE

Video shared with Canmore Cochrane Media shows an arrest in downtown Canmore near Fergus & Bix on Wednesday evening. What may initially appear as a citizen arrest was then taken over by RCMP members

The videographer, who personally recorded the footage, says he was having dinner around 9 p.m. when he heard yelling nearby. He did not witness what initially led to the confrontation.

According to the videographer, police responded very quickly to the incident.

At this time, Canmore Cochrane Media has not independently confirmed what led to the arrest or whether any charges were laid.

Parks Canada has issued its annual elk rut advisory as mating season begins in Banff National Park. Bull elk can become extremely aggressive while protecting females, and visitors are being told to stay at least 30 metres away. Dogs should remain leashed, and motorists should never stop between a bull and its group of females.
