Starting or running a business in Ontario? Here are two things to keep in mind:

Incorporated vs. Sole Proprietor
Incorporation can offer liability protection and tax planning opportunities—but it also comes with additional responsibilities and costs.

Common mistakes business owners make
One of the most frequent issues we see is delaying legal advice until a problem arises. Early guidance can help prevent costly disputes down the road.

Making informed choices early can set your business up for long-term success.

Employment Law in Ontario: What Employees Should Know

Can an employer terminate without cause?
Yes—but in many cases, proper notice or compensation is required.

What is “reasonable notice”?
It’s not always limited to what’s written in an employment contract. Factors like age, position, and length of service can matter.

Non-compete vs. non-solicitation clauses
Non-competes are often difficult to enforce in Ontario, while non-solicitation clauses are more commonly upheld.

Understanding your rights can help you make informed decisions at work.

Happy New Year! 🎆

As the new year begins, many people are planning major milestones—like buying a home or investment property.

If real estate is on your radar, it’s worth understanding title insurance and why it’s an important part of most Ontario real estate transactions.

What is title insurance?
Title insurance is a one-time policy purchased at closing that protects homeowners (and lenders) against certain title-related issues that may not be discovered during the purchase process.

What can it cover?
Depending on the policy, title insurance may protect against:

Title fraud or forgery

Unknown liens or encumbrances

Errors or omissions in public records

Boundary or survey issues

Issues affecting legal access to the property

Certain zoning or permit defects

Why is it important?
Even with a thorough title search, some problems only come to light after closing. Title insurance provides financial protection and peace of mind by covering legal costs and potential losses related to covered title defects.

As you start the year making plans and setting goals, understanding the protections in place when buying real estate can help you move forward with confidence.

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season! 🎄

Did you know?
In Ontario, many legal claims are subject to a 2-year limitation period. That means waiting too long to seek legal advice can affect your ability to pursue or defend a claim.⏰

The holidays are a time to slow down—but legal deadlines don’t always pause. If you have a legal concern, it’s often best to address it sooner rather than later.

At WSK Law, we believe in empowering our clients with knowledge.

Have you ever heard of a joint ownership agreement? 🤔

Simply put, it's a legal document that outlines how two or more individuals will share and manage property or assets together. For example, if parents help their child qualify for a mortgage by being added as owners to a property - they can use a joint ownership agreement to define who is responsible for the mortgage payments, property taxes, repair expenses, future sales proceeds, and more!

Whether it's a business venture or real estate, having a clear agreement in place helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures a smooth partnership. If you know someone who would benefit from such an agreement, reach out today!

Our experienced team is here to guide you through the process and tailor an agreement that suits your unique needs.
