As a long-time Ontario worker sidelined a couple of years ago by worsening medical conditions, you were just recently notified that your Securian Canada insurance benefits are in danger of being cut off. Ironically, while you only wish you were well enough to step back into the world you knew prior to your injury, your everyday realities paint a far different picture.

You've been reading the denial letter over and over, but with all its technical terminology and directives describing new tests, interviews, standards, and requirements, you feel overwhelmed, hardly knowing where to begin. The feeling is overwhelming: “little me” against a mighty giant:

For the past year and a half, you have been just barely able to manage your finances and pay the bills on time. Having heard stories about long-term disability benefits being cut off at the two-year mark, you are determined to remain calm and be proactive to protect the income stream on which you depend.

Are you just being paranoid? No. You have begun to sense a change in tone from your insurer. You are getting more frequent review visits and more forms to complete. There have also been several requests that you schedule an IME with a doctor of their choosing at a facility other than the one you are used to visiting. Even though you have filled out form after form over the past year or so, new forms are being sent to you requesting 'updates.'

In the most recent correspondence, there has been mention, for the first time, of your 'return-to-work' plan. Once known to be highly motivated and strongly committed to excellence at your job, you now realize that both your physical stamina and concentration have been so diminished that getting through a full day of any kind of work is just not yet possible.

Most people think the 24-month letter means their claim is over. It doesn't. It means the fight is just starting

A diagnosis alone usually does not save a Long-Term Disability claim.
What matters is whether the evidence shows you can work consistently and safely. That is where many claims fall apart.
A doctor may confirm the diagnosis, but the insurer wants to know about pace, stamina, focus, attendance, and recovery time. If you can sustain work day after day.
So when I look at a file, I do not just look for medical labels. I look for proof of functional limits.
That is the evidence that needs to be clear before the insurer makes its move.

You can be reasonable and still protect yourself.
A lot of injured people delay getting help because they do not see themselves as the type to call a lawyer.

They want to be fair.
They want to cooperate.
They want to handle things properly.
That is fine but being reasonable does not mean staying passive.

You can be honest and still protect your rights.
You can cooperate and still ask questions.
You can be fair and still push back when something is delayed, denied, or unclear.
Protecting yourself after a crash is responsible.

If you have been trying to be reasonable while feeling overwhelmed, that is exactly when guidance helps.

If you just got a letter about an Independent Medical Examination from your long-term disability insurer, you may feel a very specific kind of stress.

You are already exhausted from appointments and paperwork, and now you’re being told your benefits are “in danger” unless you attend one more exam.
The problem is that an IME is not “just another medical appointment.” It is an insurer-scheduled assessment designed to evaluate your condition and, most importantly, your functional limits for work.
Here’s the issue most people do not realize until it’s too late:
IME timing is often connected to the 24-month change in many Ontario LTD policies, when the test can shift from being unable to do your own job to being unable to do any occupation you are reasonably suited for.
And IME results can be used to support a reduction or termination of benefits, even if you have years of treating-doctor notes.
This is why people walk into IMEs thinking, “I just need to be honest,” and walk out shocked by what shows up in the report later.

Most people on Long-Term Disability want stability.
They want to pay the mortgage. Keep affording treatment. Protect their family. And keep some dignity while they recover.
That is why the 24-month mark is so stressful.
The insurer starts using phrases like any occupation, sedentary work, rehab planning, or return to work.
So you need records, medical notes, and proof of what your condition actually does to your daily function.
The goal is to protect your benefits before one letter changes your life.

The "minor" crashes often become the biggest problems.

The cases that concern me most are often the crashes people call minor.
Because the injured person usually waits.

They keep working.
They do not document symptoms.
They assume the pain will pass.
Then a week later, they need treatment, the insurer wants paperwork, and the story is harder to prove.

A small-looking crash can still lead to real pain, sleep disruption, anxiety, and time off work.

Take the symptoms seriously before the file starts getting shaped by someone else.

If the crash looked minor but your life does not feel normal, do not brush it off.
