Black History Month is a time to celebrate Black excellence, leadership, and community impact, not only historically, but in the meaningful work done every day.
At Oakley Family Law, we are proud to celebrate two exceptional Black lawyers whose commitment to service, justice, and community strengthens our firm and the profession as a whole: Cindy Marshall, KC and Jamie-Lee Denton.
Cindyâs work is deeply rooted in service. Over more than two decades of practice, she has built a career grounded in public interest, particularly in child protection and family violence matters. A dedicated advocate, Cindy regularly lends her voice to public conversations on access to justice and French language rights. Her impact has been recognized through numerous honours, including her Kingâs Counsel designation in 2022, the 2024 Women in Law Leadership (WILL) Award for Leadership in the Community, the 2019 Association des juristes de lâexpression française Volunteer Award, and the 2016 Alan D. Hunter Award for Volunteer of the Year from Calgary Legal Guidance.
Jamie-Leeâs practice is similarly grounded in community and humanity. Informed by lived experience and shaped by work across both public and private sectors, she approaches family law with a belief that justice must remain human-centred. Deeply involved in her community, Jamie-Lee collaborates with local organizations to advance access-to-justice initiatives and mentors aspiring law students. She also volunteers with the Edmonton International Film Festival reflecting her commitment to storytelling and representation.
Ladies, thank you for your continued contributions to our community. This month, and always, we celebrate you.
