Did you Know: You can be charged for stealing an oyster in Canada.

Two sections of the Canadian Criminal Code - sections 323 and 334, together establish this.

This provision comes from an era of oyster vandalism, and it exists to further protect the interests of oyster fishermen whose marine mollusks were being vandalized for their pearls.

Big milestone alert! Today, we’re celebrating a very special moment—Ezinwa Ntima’s official call to the Alberta Bar! ⚖️

From her early days at the University of Waterloo to building a diverse career in corporate Canada, Zee’s path has been anything but ordinary. That journey ultimately led her to law school in the UK—and thankfully, to our team.

As an articling student at EO Law and our in-house “Social Prefect”, Ezinwa brought passion, dedication, and a vibrant energy to every file, contributing across corporate, employment, personal injury, and beyond. Watching her grow into the lawyer she is today has been nothing short of inspiring.

Now, she officially steps into this next chapter as a member of the Law Society of Alberta, and we can’t wait to see what lies ahead.

Congratulations, Ezinwa—we’re proud to have been part of your journey. 🎉

Did you know that up until 2018, duelling was considered a crime in Canada?

In 2018, parts of the Canadian Criminal Code were repealed or amended; One of such parts that were repealed includes the section on duels. Since its repeal, dueling is no longer considered a crime.

However, due to the deadly nature of duels, participants may still be charged with offences such as assault, murder, etc under the Criminal Code.

“You can cut all the flowers, but you cannot keep spring from coming.” – Pablo Neruda

In this quote Pablo is highlighting the growth that Spring brings to the world and how we can apply that same growth mindset to our own lives to motivate ourselves. While words can take on many different meanings, this message conveys that disappointment and failure do not define our worth. Just as you were “cut” down, like a flower you will grow and learn nonetheless.

Regardless of how you interpret it, this quote from the famous Chilean poet is a refreshing reassurance that no matter what, “you cannot keep spring from coming.”

Did you know that according to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code, Part 8 under Section 126, it’s illegal to paint a wooden ladder in Alberta. This law intends to prevent the paint from concealing defects that can otherwise pose a safety risk to users.

You can, however, preserve a wooden ladder using transparent protective coating.

A legal professional will be able to help with the complexities surrounding all legal knowledge and limitations.

ASK EOLAW: Temporary Residence (Work Permit) vs. Permanent Residence: what do you need to know when planning migration to Canada?

The difference between a Work Permit and Permanent Residency (PR) rests in your plans as a foreign national for your future in Canada. While a permit may help you achieve PR status, it is only a temporary stepping stone with limitations based on your employment. PR is what sets you on the path to full Canadian citizenship.

Overall, it’s important to contact a legal professional to handle the complexities surrounding Immigration Law. For legal advice and representation, please contact us at 403 719 6488 or via email at [email protected]. We operate from Monday to Friday between 9 AM to 5 PM.

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.” ― Mary Anne Radmacher

In her sentiments about courage, this Author exemplifies that being brave even for the small things is still courageous. So, pat yourself on the back, and always keep trying your best.

ASK EOLAW: Can a Tenant’s Guarantor be held Responsible for outstanding Payments?

Without an explicit clause outlining the Guarantor’s responsibilities, you may not be able to hold them responsible for missed rent, utility bills, or property damages.

Occasionally, a separate Guarantee Agreement may further define the scope of the Guarantor’s role.

“Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.” – Brad Henry

We hope everyone had an amazing Family Day yesterday in Canada and to those who celebratabroad! Families are the backbones of communities and our last line of defence when all motivation and hope is lost. Our families, whether by blood or chosen, are there in both the moments where we cannot lift ourselves and for our greatest achievements; they see us through our lives. Today, Canada is taking a day to allow people to return or call our homes, so from all of us at EO Law Office, “Happy Family Day!”
