This week is small business week!

Being a small business owner means wearing many hats.

It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands of running a business and forget to look up.

But one of the most important things we can do as business owners is stay engaged.

Engaged with our industry.
Engaged with our community.
Engaged with other business owners.

Some of the best opportunities come from conversations we didn’t plan to have, relationships we took the time to build, and ideas we were curious enough to explore.
Small business ownership can sometimes feel isolating.

That is why community matters.

As part of my LL.M program, we had a guest lecturer who emphasized 3 factors that contribute to employee retention across industries:

1. A short commute
2. Feeling appreciated
3. A sense of belonging

Simple concepts, but powerful ones.

Lately, I’ve been speaking with a lot of lawyers who are unhappy with the profession. It has made me reflect on how much the environment in which we work shapes the experience of our careers. The legal profession can be demanding. The hours can be long, the stakes can be high, and the emotional toll can be significant.

But what if we paid more attention to the things that make people want to stay?

We often talk about retention in terms of compensation, benefits, and career advancement. Those things matter, but so do the everyday experiences that make people feel valued, connected, and supported.

If any of my legal friends need support, let’s grab coffee.

One habit I’ve noticed in successful people: they keep betting on themselves.

Even when no one else does.

They keep going when the outcome is uncertain.
They keep moving forward when they feel embarrassed, or uncomfortable.

Sometimes betting on yourself means being willing to look foolish for a little while.

It means taking the risk.
Learning from the setback.
Dusting yourself off.
And trying again.

Make sure you lean on those that support you when navigating such stressful seasons.

I was talking with someone recently who said:
“I have never worked as hard as I have since becoming self-employed.”

And honestly? I get it.

Exhaustion can be a mindset. Sometimes we are more capable than we give ourselves credit for.

But there is also a different kind of motivation that comes from building something that is yours.

When you are self-employed, the work you put in directly contributes to the business you are building. There is something incredibly rewarding about grinding for something you believe in.

Just make sure, you schedule some rest in there too.

Just like that, semester 4 of 6 is done for my LL.M program!

What a great week it was.

One thing I continue to notice about people who are highly successful is their curiosity.

They remain curious about the people around them.
Curious about different perspectives.

And, importantly, they approach others with the humility to learn.

As I continue my LL.M journey, I’m reminded that education doesn’t only happen in a classroom or through a textbook.

Some of the best learning happens through conversations, experiences, and the people we encounter along the way.

Refuting Lawyer Myths: Post #3 of #3
Myth: If I hire a lawyer, I will end up in court.

Reality: Not true.

Hiring a lawyer does not automatically mean going to court. In fact, for most family law matters in Alberta, parties are required to participate in a dispute resolution process, such as mediation, before bringing an application to court, subject to exceptions.

Mediation gives parties an opportunity to resolve their issues collaboratively, with the guidance of their lawyers, without the time, expense, and stress of litigation.

As a family lawyer, I believe in helping clients understand their options and choosing a process that fits their circumstances.

The goal is resolution, not litigation for the sake of litigation.

Myth: Lawyers are non-responsive.
Reality: While the majority of professional complaints against lawyers are communication-related, I pride myself on providing a timely response to my clients whether it is just, “I have received your e-mail, and I anticipate providing you with a response within 24 hours.”

Simple updates go a long way when dealing with people that are stressed.
