A lot of small businesses wait on legal notice until something breaks. That’s usually when it’s most expensive.

Clear agreements early help prevent issues like partner disagreements, fuzzy payment terms, and timeline disputes.

Good legal advice early is cheaper than fixing mistakes later.

Before you register a business, run this quick checklist:

✅ Check if your business name is already in use
✅ Have your ID and business structure decided
✅ Confirm where you will operate (it can affect registration)

These tiny steps save you time on Day 1.

Registering a business in Alberta is a structured process, but it’s very manageable when you know the steps.

Here’s a clear breakdown of what’s involved:

𝟏. 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
You’ll first decide whether you’re registering as a sole proprietor, partnership, or corporation. This decision affects your taxes, liability, and ongoing compliance obligations.

𝟐. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡
If you’re not using your legal personal name, you’ll need a NUANS name search to confirm your business name is available and not confusingly similar to an existing one.

𝟑. 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬
Registration is completed through an authorized registry agent in Alberta. Corporations must also file articles of incorporation and appoint directors.

𝟒. 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬
Depending on your structure, you may need:
• Identification
• NUANS report
• Articles of incorporation
• Shareholder or partnership information
• Registered office address

While registration itself is administrative, legal advice can be helpful when choosing the right structure, setting ownership terms, or planning for future growth.

Starting right helps you avoid costly corrections later. Visit jjmlaw.ca to learn more.

You can register a business in Alberta without a lawyer.

But registration is only the starting point.

Most issues show up after the business is set up, not during the filing.

Legal support becomes valuable when you are dealing with:
• Contracts and payment terms
• Partners or shareholders
• Liability and risk exposure
• Branding and ownership rights

Problems rarely come from missing paperwork. They come from unclear expectations.

If you are unsure whether legal support makes sense for your business, reach out to JJM Barristers & Solicitors to review your setup before small issues become expensive ones.

Families without wills are left working through a system that may not reflect your wishes.

In fact, according to a recent Angus Reid Institute study, half of Canadians don’t have a signed will, even though most say they understand the importance of having one.

The gap isn’t awareness. It’s action.

Wills are more than legal paperwork, they’re personal blueprints for how your life’s work is handled when you’re gone.

A properly drafted will make sure your intentions are legally clear: who inherits what, who looks after your children, and who manages your estate.

It puts you, not the courts, in control.
