Meet Grace, a family lawyer who joined our team this fall. Grace is passionate about using advocacy and interest-based negotiation to help family law clients navigate some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

Grace studied law at the University of Calgary, and completed her articles at Calgary Legal Guidance, where she primarily practiced family law, advocating for victims of domestic violence, and criminal law. She is committed to helping her clients find true resolutions to their family law disputes.

The legal profession is a difficult thing. When I decided at 16 years old I wanted to become a lawyer, I had no idea what that would truly mean in terms of the culture I would be surrounded by for many years following.

⭐️

Competition. Perfection. No work life balance. Constantly feeling like everything is screaming at you that you have to do more and be more and achieve more.

⭐️

The years that I worked for other firms were likely some of the most miserable of my life. I lost my self-confidence. I felt like I could never measure up. I felt like I needed to be a machine, and yet I knew I could only live that way for so long. I spent more all-nighters at the office than I would like to admit. I was so unhappy but I didn’t see a way out. And then after giving everything I had, I felt like it was never enough - like I was never enough.

Eventually I decided it was time for a change. And that it was time to create a change for others. I started my own firm. And committed that it would be different. Lawyers would be valued and appreciated and celebrated for their strengths. Work-life balance would be encouraged. We would do exceptional work, but not at the expense of ourselves. We would be able to have families and put them first. We would give back. We would make a difference. And we would create a new way of practicing law.

I am grateful to get to live a different path now. I’m grateful to get to work with people who are kind and down-to-earth and who want to make a difference like I do. I am grateful to work in a culture that celebrates rather than shames. I am grateful that I didn’t need to give up being a lawyer, I just needed to blaze a different trail.
