IRCC announced significant changes to the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) taking effect on November 3, 2026.

A new Labour Market Integration factor will award points based on either qualifying Canadian work experience or a qualifying job offer in an eligible high-wage occupation. Candidates who qualify under both will receive whichever option gives them the higher CRS score — the points will not be combined. The new factor can provide up to 150 CRS points for candidates without an accompanying spouse or 140 points with one.

IRCC is also removing the LMIA requirement for qualifying job offers used for Express Entry eligibility and CRS points.

How long should an applicant anticipate waiting for the processing of their Canadian citizenship application? 🇨🇦

IRCC’s service standard for a routine Canadian citizenship grant application is approximately 12 months, with the department aiming to finalize about 80% of routine applications within that timeframe.

Actual processing times, however, can vary significantly. Straightforward applications may be completed in 8 to 10 months, while files involving additional background checks, residence concerns, document verification, or other review issues can take 12 to 18 months or longer.

We continue to see significant differences in processing times from one citizenship application to another.

🥳⭐️ Congratulations to two of our clients who recently experienced fast processing. We submitted their applications in February 2026 and received the in-person Citizenship ceremony invitation in September. 💫

Other applicants, however, may wait considerably longer. Citizenship processing times should therefore be viewed as estimates rather than guarantees, as each application is assessed individually.

LMIA Processing Times Show Signs of Improvement

Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) processing times declined across several streams of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in September 2026, though wait times still vary considerably by application type.

Reported decreases ranged from about one day to 77 days. The largest reduction was recorded in the Permanent Resident stream, where processing times fell to their lowest level so far in 2026.

Actual timelines depend on application volume, LMIA stream, submission completeness, and any requests for information or employer compliance reviews.

Employers should therefore continue to build sufficient processing time into workforce planning and avoid relying on recent improvements as an indication that individual applications will necessarily be finalized more quickly.

IRCC currently posts a processing time of 15 weeks for work permit applications submitted inside Canada. This estimate runs from receipt of a complete application to a decision. Actual timelines vary based on application volume and case complexity. Incomplete applications may be delayed or returned.

Remember, the experience varies from case to case.

Today, we are delighted to congratulate our client from China, whose entire family received their approvals after approximately 12 weeks.

However, another client from Ireland received their work permit in Canada after 25 weeks.

Yet another client from Sri Lanka received his work permit in 3 weeks this past Summer.

All work permits were LMIA-based.

This shows how processing can vary from application to application. Don't get too alarmed if yours takes longer; it is part of the process.

Canada Invites 3,500 Tradespeople to Apply for Permanent Residence

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued 3,500 invitations to apply for permanent residence through an Express Entry draw targeting trades occupations.

Candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 476 and had to meet the work experience requirements for the Trades category, along with the applicable Express Entry eligibility criteria.

This is encouraging news for eligible tradespeople considering their future in Canada. However, working in a trade does not automatically qualify someone for Express Entry or guarantee an invitation.

Understanding your occupation, work experience, language results, and eligibility is essential when assessing your options.

BIG increase in processing times for Canadian citizenship certificates.

As of September 2026, new applicants for a proof of Canadian citizenship certificate may now wait about 33 months for a decision.

IRCC updated its processing-time tool on September 3, showing an increase of about eight months. In August, the estimated processing time was 25 months.

For someone applying today, that could mean waiting until approximately mid-2029 for a decision.

Citizenship certificates are often required for passport applications and other important matters, so this growing delay can significantly affect applicants.

If you need proof of Canadian citizenship, planning ahead and applying as early as possible is becoming increasingly important.
