On December 15, 2025, the Government of Canada passed Bill C-3, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act, reforming the present Citizenship Act to change the first-generation limit on citizenship by descent. Before Bill C-3, Canadian citizenship by descent was limited to the first generation born outside Canada.

Now, those previously impacted by this limit may be able to claim Canadian citizenship by descent.

The US government has announced a major reduction in the fee to renounce US citizenship — from $2,350 to $450.

For many US citizens living abroad, cost has been a barrier to starting the renunciation process. A reduction of this size will encourage many more individuals to begin the process.

Wait times for renunciation appointments are already lengthy, and appointments can be difficult to secure. With lower fees expected to increase demand, those hoping to complete the process before the end of 2026 may need to begin soon. Waiting too long could push renunciation into 2027, and potentially mean another year of US tax filing.

If you are considering renouncing US citizenship in 2026, starting the process sooner rather than later may be critical.

Record numbers of US citizens living around the world have recently renounced or are in the process of renouncing. In 2025, nearly 5,000 people renounced, the highest since 2020, and 2026 is on track to have even more renunciations. Why would the United States, with a seven to ten-year waitlist to acquire citizenship, have so many citizens headed for the exits?

One of the most common reasons is that three-letter word no one likes to hear: tax.

A new bill introduced by Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) has sparked debate and concern across the global US expat community. His proposal? Eliminate the legal recognition of dual citizenship in the United States.

Under the proposed legislation, anyone holding US citizenship and another nationality would have just one year to choose: forfeit their foreign nationality or be stripped of US citizenship permanently!

𝗨𝗦 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀

The Trump Administration has caused both excitement and confusion with the recently announced “Gold Card” and “Platinum Card.” Reports suggest that the Gold Card, for a $1 million USD contribution, will allow foreign nationals to obtain permanent residence with the ability to live and work in the US, along with a path to citizenship. Furthermore, the Platinum Card is reported to allow foreign nationals to spend up to 270 days in the US annually without paying taxes on non-US sourced income for a contribution of $5 Million USD.

What the Trump Administration omitted in this announcement was that the existing E-2 Treaty Investor Program and the EB-5 Regional Center Investor Program already offer comparable benefits based on investment, not contribution.
