Jatin addressed this on a panel at the University of Calgary, hosted by the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre, during a discussion on the immigration questions in Alberta's referendum.

The reality is more complicated than the headlines suggest, and immigration is not the villain.

Behind every number is a person who chose to build a life here.

We are seeing an uptake in clients who come to us after receiving a procedural fairness letter (PFL) from IRCC. 🇨🇦

If you have received one, it helps to know what it is. 

A PFL is NOT a refusal. 

It means an officer has concerns about your application, often about your documents or admissibility, and sometimes about possible misrepresentation.

Where the concern is misrepresentation, a finding can lead to five years of inadmissibility to Canada.

Before making a decision, the officer must give you the opportunity to respond.

That response matters. Your letter sets out a deadline, and if it passes, the officer will decide without hearing from you. An explanation alone may not be enough.

Each concern should be addressed directly and supported with evidence. A PFL is a serious step in the process, but it is also your opportunity to be heard.

Congratulations, Jatin, on being named to Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Canadaâ„¢ in immigration law for 2027!

In immigration law the stakes are almost never small, because a single decision can determine where someone builds a life, or whether they get to build one at all.

Every file that comes through our doors belongs to someone. A family waiting on a decision. A business that cannot move until the paperwork does. A person who has run out of other options.

That is the work Jatin has been doing for eight years.

Thank you to the clients who trusted us, and to the mentors across the country who gave their time freely.

Most of all, thank you to a team that holds every file to the same standard, and that standard does not move.

Everyone in Canada has the right to protest. But if your immigration status is unresolved, whether you should is a legal question. Many graduates in Calgary were told there was no risk in showing up.

That advice was wrong.

CBSA officers attended the site, and several attendees are now facing questions about their admissibility. Last week, Jatin spoke with CBC News about the situation.

This is not about staying silent. It is about protecting yourself while your case is still live.
