About Us
Calgary Legal Guidance's Indigenous Justice Program, Sahwoo mohkaaktsi ma taas (SMTMT), is dedicated to advancing access to justice for Indigenous Peoples through culturally grounded support and advocacy. Rooted in respect, relationship, and community, the program's name reflects the importance of coming together to help and guide one another.
We provide holistic legal information, resources, and referrals that recognize the unique experiences and systemic barriers faced by Indigenous individuals. Our approach honours Indigenous ways of knowing and being by creating a safe, welcoming space where clients are supported with dignity, understanding, and care.
A key part of our program is the Aspommtapi ('helper' in the Blackfoot language) who works directly in the community to support clients. The Aspommtapi plays an essential role in providing cultural support, assisting with justice system navigation, court support, and connecting individuals to wraparound services. Clients receive guidance that is not only practical but also culturally meaningful, helping bridge gaps between systems and the community.
Through collaboration with community partners, a commitment to reconciliation, and culturally appropriate justice support, SMTMT works to empower Indigenous clients to navigate legal challenges while strengthening connections to culture, community, and justice.
This page is a dedicated place to learn more about SMTMT and the services we offer, how to contact us and learn more about the need for culture to support justice connection.
