🇨🇦 BIG CHANGES TO CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP RULES
If you have a Canadian parent or grandparent — or you're a permanent resident working toward citizenship — this affects you.
Here's what changed in 2026:
✅ Bill C-3 (in force Dec 15, 2025) removed the old "first-generation limit." If you were born before Dec 15, 2025 and have a Canadian parent or grandparent, you may already be a citizen — you just need to prove it.
✅ Babies born abroad on or after Dec 15, 2025 now need a parent who's spent 1,095 days physically in Canada before the birth (this is different from the PR residency rule — don't mix them up).
✅ The citizenship test is now online by default for applicants aged 18–54.
⚠️ Heads up: IRCC has started reviewing some certificates issued under the new law and asking a few applicants to return documents. Processing times have also stretched to 8–15 months. Translation: get your paperwork right the first time.
