🚨🇨🇦 GOOD NEWS FOR CANADIAN EMPLOYERS! NEW LOW-WAGE LMIA OPPORTUNITIES!

As of October 9, 2026, updated unemployment rates are creating new opportunities for employers looking to hire foreign workers!

📍 British Columbia:

🟢 Kamloops: 3.6%
🟢 Chilliwack: 5.6%
🟢 Victoria: 5.8%
🔴 Vancouver: 7.0%

✅ If your business’s actual work location is in an eligible area with unemployment below 6%, you may qualify to apply for a low-wage LMIA when you cannot find qualified Canadian citizens or permanent residents to fill your job vacancies.

🏨 This includes restaurants, hotels, retail stores and many other businesses — not just construction or agriculture!

❌ Vancouver and much of the Lower Mainland remain subject to low-wage LMIA processing restrictions, unless an exemption applies.

🇨🇦 This update applies across Canada! Check the unemployment rate in your business’s location.

📅 Rates effective until January 7, 2027.

⚠️ All other LMIA requirements must be met. Approval is not guaranteed.

A positive LMIA is important, but it does not automatically guarantee approval of a work permit. 🇨🇦 IRCC must still be satisfied that the job offer is genuine and that all work permit requirements are met.

📚 New IRCC update for work permit holders in Canada

As of September 4, 2026, eligible foreign workers who hold a valid work permit may study in Canada without a study permit for a program or course of 6 months or less.

⚠️ Immigration circumstances vary. If you received an IRCC notification about this measure, keep it for your records.

LMIA pending ? IRCC extends the deadline from 60 to 90 days: If your work permit is expiring and your employer already submitted an LMIA, IRCC has extended the time to provide the LMIA decision from 60 days to 90 days in eligible concurrent-processing cases.

This can help workers whose LMIA is still pending because of processing delays.

⚠️ But this does not apply to everyone. Specific conditions must be met before applying without the final LMIA decision.

If your work permit is expiring and your LMIA is still pending, contact your employer or the representative handling the LMIA as soon as possible to review your options before your permit expires.
