Session #2: Monthly Wellness Lunch!
Our second session of GKS’ Monthly Wellness Lunch, hosted by Risha and Lauren, fell in May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. As such, we had a very special session 🌟, where we discussed important topics like recognizing signs of mental health struggles, debunking common misconceptions and stereotypes, and learning about steps to take when you recognize Mental Health symptoms. We also went over resources, such as LifeSpeak, Lawyers Assistance Program, and Telus Health One.

It was a supportive and collaborative session emphasizing prioritizing mental well-being!

The national Day of Mourning is observed in Canada on April 28th. Every year, on April 28th, workers, families, employers, and others come together at events held around the province to remember those who have lost their lives on the job, and to renew our commitment to creating safer workplaces. In 2023, 175 B.C. workers died from a workplace injury or disease. There were 82 fatalities due to traumatic injury and 93 fatalities due to occupational disease. Let us take this day to honor the memories of those who have been affected and recommit ourselves to creating safer workplaces for all.

Asbestos Awareness Week is an opportunity to provide awareness about the dangers of asbestos in the workplace.

Awareness: Asbestos was used as a building material until the early 1990s in BC and can be present in many areas of older buildings.

Risks: Asbestos exposure can cause serious health problems, including Asbestosis, Lung cancer, Mesothelioma (a cancer), and pleural thickening (a lung disease). Illnesses from asbestos can show up years later.

Who is at Risk: Workers may be exposed to asbestos while doing repairs, renovations, or demolishing older buildings in B.C. Workers with the highest risk of asbestos exposure include demolition and renovation contractors, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, building owners, home inspectors, insurance adjusters, and real estate agents.

Prevention and Action: If you suspect asbestos is present, stop work immediately and have a qualified asbestos professional complete an asbestos survey. If you have a work-related injury or illness, you may be entitled to compensation through WorkSafeBC.

Starting January 1, 2024, employers and workers will have a legal duty to cooperate with each other and with WorkSafeBC in timely and safe return to work following a worker’s injury, and certain employers will have an obligation to return injured workers to work in specific circumstances.

To help workers understand these changes, WorkSafeBC is hosting a virtual info session on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, 5:00 – 5:45 p.m. Registration is free and there will be time for questions after the presentation.

Bill 41 established an independent Fair Practices Commissioner. Effective today, Sept 26, 2023, Mr. Allan Seckel (FPC) will begin receiving complaints. Also effective today, the Fair Practices Office changed its name to the Issue Resolution Office.

The Fair Practices Commissioner will:
* Investigate complaints of unfairness by WorkSafeBC.
* Recommend to WorkSafeBC how to resolve these complaints.
* Recommend how to address systemic problems with the fairness of WorkSafeBC’s practices.
