Immigration Update! 🎉

British Columbia’s provincial attestation letter (PAL) system is effective as of March 4, 2024.
International students must submit a PAL with their study permit application to prove that they have been accepted by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) within the limits of its allocation. 🎓

The B.C. government says the provincial government issues PAL’s to institutions, who then issue the letters to the international applicant.

B.C.’s PAL system is the first to be released since IRCC introduced a cap on the number of study permits it would issue in 2024. Other provinces are expected to follow suit shortly to meet the March 31 deadline. 🇨🇦

➡️ Immigration Update! On February 28th, the IRCC invited 1,470 Express Entry candidates to apply for PR in a general draw! 🎉

This was a general draw, and only applicants with a CRS score of at least 534 could receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). This shows that the CRS score is trending down from previous draws! 🎉

Yesterday’s draw is the fifth of the General draws issued in 2024. The last draw for the same category was held on February 13, 2024, which invited 1,490 candidates from all programs without any specific category restrictions with a minimum CRS score of 535. 🇨🇦

📣 On January 22nd, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced changes to stabilize growth and decrease the number of international study permits for international students in 2024.

Starting in September 2024, international students who begin a study program that is part of a curriculum licensing agreement will no longer be eligible for a PGWP after graduating.

By implementing this change, IRCC intends to mitigate these situations and maintain a more controlled and sustainable environment for international students in Canada.

IRCC also announced that graduates of Master’s and other short graduate-level programs will soon be eligible to apply for a 3-year work permit.

Under current criteria, a PGWP length is based on the length of someone’s study program. Since Master’s programs are usually shorter than undergraduate programs, the current criteria have limited the amount of time Master’s students or other graduate students can work in Canada. This change will allow Masters students to be eligible for longer work permits, which will provide them with an extended opportunity to gain valuable Canadian work experience. This often makes it easier for them to become permanent residents.

Immigration Update! ➡️

On January 1st, 2024, IRCC reset the cap and began accepting applications for two caregiver pilot programs: The Home Childcare Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot: Direct to Permanent Residence category.

These programs are specifically for applicants with work experience in caregiving. Both pilot programs were launched in 2019 and are set to expire on June 17, 2024. They have proven popular with nearly 1,100 caregivers and their family members becoming permanent residents in 2022. 🇨🇦

IRCC also announced that the work experience requirement for caregivers would be cut from 24 to 12 months of full-time work. The change was expected to impact 90% of applicants for caregiver immigration programs. 🥼
