Grateful to be healing from 24 years of practicing primarily personal injury law, but continuing to advocate for cyclists, with a new focus upon legal practitioners suffering primary/secondary trauma from their profession.

Struck by the sign depicted in this photo from on FB.

Even in the 70s, people had to be reminded (by a sign that attracted their attention as they parked…) not to run over kids because they were in a rush as they drove.

This ride is open to all... you do not need to be an LDCC Member to participate (see below)

LDCC West and VeloLaw are hosting a ride in recognition of the 2025 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This is an OC Try a Club ride so there may be non-members attending.

The ride will start in Dundas, Ontario and will follow the rail trail to Brantford. We will stop for a short coffee then head to the Woodland Cultural Center (former Mohawk residential school). We will stay there for 1-2 hrs depending on the events.
This will be a mellow and social ride (all riders welcome) and the distance is roughly 75km on flat rail trail.

Recommended bike is gravel or cyclocross.
Wear Orange. (time to pull our your old LDCC Kits)

Lately, opportunities for learning are swirling about me everywhere. And, I am *here* for it.
~
I spent the last three days on a true bucket list experience for me. A tip-to-tip ride across , via , plus c. 15km on either end to finish the job, and a final 43km home for a total of 356km.
~
But, as is so often true, the ride itself wasn’t the thing.
~
It was the way three days presented themselves, with favourable weather, in a way that meant I’d be inconveniencing others minimally if at all. It was grabbing that opportunity with both hands, despite inevitable logistical hurdles.
~
There’s always a reason not to do the thing. Do the thing.
~
It also opened a window for solitary meditative reflection in a constantly changing but always beautiful natural setting. This was primarily focused upon first hearing .brackett on the podcast, then devouring his audiobook “Dealing with Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want”.
~
Sometimes an author succeeds in imparting complexities that have been their life’s work with such clarity it changes everything. I find it most powerful when concepts are those I *know* to be true, but I haven’t yet been able to marshal the capacity to truly understand.
~
Marc leads with such personal vulnerability and plain language explanations that I couldn’t help but shift my perception of my own emotional reactions, and of the reactions of others.
~
It’s a great book. I commend it to you.
~
The ride is a gorgeous, motor vehicle traffic-free one across a beautiful province. It’s doable in a day for cycling superstars. It’s doable in three or thereabouts for those of us who aren’t. It’d be comfortable for most experienced cyclists in a week.
~
I commend it to you as well.

I am very proud of my association with LapDogs Cycling Club. I believe the leadership and the membership of Lapdogs walk the talk, seeking to view the club’s raison d’être through an equity lens, all the while constantly striving to do better.

For the second year, the club and I have organized a ride from Café Domestiique in Dundas to Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford on
~
This year is special. You’ll see that after years of effort, Tuesday September 30 the Woodland Centre is officially opening the former Mohawk Institute Residential School to the public. There is a long agenda of ceremonies, tours and a lot more to mark this momentous event.
~
The club has sought and received approval from Ontario Cycling to designate this ride a “try a ride”, so everyone is invited to join us! We leave Dundas for the approximately 75km round trip at 9:30am sharp, and the pace is “mellow and social”. Gravel bikes are recommended as the majority of the route is on the Hamilton’s-Brantford Rail Trail, with little time on-road. You should have completed a ride of at least 50km this season to ensure you enjoy the ride.
~
Please wear orange.

If you’d like to join us, just email [email protected] and we’ll get you signed up! Please contact Maureen or me with any questions!

This post isn’t what it may appear.
~
Yes, it looks like another “here’s my haircut but it’s really an excuse to me to cast for compliments by posting a selfie” post. But, it’s not. At least, that’s not the intention. 😉
~
It’s a Support Small Business and post. And, two for one. 🙂
~
I’m blessed to be back on for a short trip to participate in a couple of profoundly significant events. More on those another time.
~
But, anytime I am here, I’ve a long list of small businesses, typically run by folks who become good friends that I make sure to frequent.
~
A couple of days back, before taking in and the standout on live , I went and got the depicted haircut. As always, thank you to Tarky (intermittently on here, but you can find him at the same handle .com) who is a great person, a great, heart-forward man (a bike guy!) and cuts the best fade I know for a price that’s still too low for the quality and the experience he offers.
~
The other, for those who know me well, is who together with his wife Jennifer are amongst the people who make this Island so special to me. is as good a bike maintenance/repair shop as you’ll find anywhere. And, he doesn’t only run a business, but uses that business to make his community better. And, every time I drop I bike off, I know the next time it’s under me, it’ll feel brand new all over again.
~
There are many, many small businesses like Tarky’s and Ted’s all over this Island. And, experiencing this level of service, care and friendship makes my heart sing every single time.

We reap what we sow.
~
First, I’m not surprised that no individual was willing to put their name to this sloppy piece of “journalism”, .
~
1. “A truck hit…” 2. “…the cyclist matter.” 3. Why are you protecting the identity of the driver?
~
This article doesn’t identify him, but Richard Alan Moore of Niagara Falls struck and killed 84 year old cyclist Nestor Chemerika on July 13, 2023.
~
Mr. Moore struck Mr. Chemerika with his (yes, as usual, pickup truck) vehicle, throwing his body into a drainage ditch where surrounded by a destroyed bike and truck parts, he was found by a Niagara police officer on a routine patrol.
~
Moore claimed he didn’t know he was involved in a collision, left Chemerika to die in the ditch, and his truck was found six days later, with the damage repaired with used parts.
~
You may recall, this is not the first time I have seen the same abhorrent conduct by a driver, right down to covering their tracks and defending themselves with “what, who, me?!?”
~
Somehow, a charge of careless driving causing death was dropped and he was convicted only of leaving the scene.
~
Now, he is alleged to have struck a swimmer with his boat, causing life-threatening injuries, while piloting it impaired.
~
I suppose we’ll find out if the lives of swimmers are considered to have more inherent value than those of cyclists. Probably not. They aren’t in cars.
~
Mr. Moore is entitled to a defence. But? As the facts appear, this man should not see the outside of a cell for a very long time and should never be permitted to drive anything with a motor again.
~

Enough.

We’ve all seen this.
~
wants us all in cars.
~
It was the outlet in Souris, PEI (which, like all others here I presume is owned by .p.murphyhotels) yesterday that pushed me over the edge, but this is a consistent pattern at just about every franchise I’ve visited for years.
~
I took this photo at the 14 minute mark of being ignored at the counter as a walk-in to get a coffee and a tea. Finally, I broke down and called a server over, who clearly had no idea I was even there.
~
I was not impatient, nor in a rush, so I thought I’d do a little experiment.
~
I observed the image of drive-through cars turned 🟨 when they had been waiting for over 1 minute, 20 seconds and red no later than the 1:40 mark. In over 16 minutes, despite a steady stream of traffic, not one car waited more than a few seconds beyond the 2 minute mark.
~
This isn’t about giving great, quick service to customers in cars. It’s doing it at the expense of people standing in restaurants, including those who like me *pre-ordered*.
~
It’s about setting rigid benchmarks for service for one class of customer, with I suspect a total absence of the same for others.
~
It makes business sense. And, states intention.
~
But, from a policy, public health and corporate citizen perspective, it sucks.
~
The “War on the Car” is a lie.
~
Those who use active transportation or mobility devices? Even those who like me simply park, refusing to use the drive-through? Our money doesn’t matter.
~
In many places, it’s enough of a problem that lineups extend off the property, into the travelled portion of the roadway.
~
And, yes. For a very small proportion of the population, drive-through can make sense for those with small children or who have mobility restrictions. But, curb-side works.
~
I know eliminating drive-throughs would be unpopular, good policy-making. We choose convenience over safety and our environment.
~
Imagine extending better service to those who seek to *talk* to one another, instead of those idling in a lineup…one more small change that would make cities and ourselves physically and emotionally healthier.
~
Sorry . Your beautiful “Fast Car” wasn’t an option…

Life is beautiful.
~
Life is hard.
~
I have to keep reminding myself that above all, life is ever-changing and ephemeral. What the beautiful, the painful and even the mundane have in common is that they end and go away.
~
This afternoon’s news that Upstreet Craft Brewing’s proposal to its creditors was not accepted is my reminder to treasure the beautiful while we have it.
~
Upstreet was, in my experience, the best of everything. From the beer, the food (the first menu of which I recall being curated by culinary superstar and beautiful friend ), the people and the social conscience, for the last ten years, more often than not, my first on-Island stop each trip would be the brewhouse on Allen Street.
~
And, with the launch of their early embrace of the non-alcohol market made it that much easier for me to leave drinking in my rear-view mirror over five years ago.
~
They partnered with other great local businesses, like and his .inspired team for the Upstreet Brewhouse BBQ joint in Dartmouth, and and at .
~
I’ve somehow not yet met , but hope to soon. We judge people by those they associate themselves with, and is business partner, brewmaster is the kind of person who keeps me coming back to the Island I love like home.
~
They made a great local product, innovated with Libra, and others and most importantly stood for a corporate ethos of inclusion, social responsibility and care for community. They had bike parking from the very beginning too!
~
I wish I could have gotten in one more time next month, but I am grateful for the role Upstreet has played in my Island life and my sobriety.

This is not least because it is showing here in at a local jewel, the historic, independent . But, the story is the thing.

I’ll be attending to learn more of those hardy women who, for six years in the 1980s, raced the women’s Tour de France.
~
Here’s some of what , 1989 Junior World Road Champion, 2004 Olympic Road silver medallist, multiple medallist at World, U.S. National and Pan-Am games and co-owner of Toronto’s (who will be introducing the Toronto screening this evening) has to say about those women:

“I raced professionally for 16 years, culminating in an Olympic Silver Medal at the 2004 Athens Games. But before I ever lined up at the start of a major race, there was a generation of women who fought for the right to be there. They rode through resistance, through skepticism, and fought against the belief that women’s cycling could never stand on equal footing with the men’s sport. They persevered when the odds were stacked against them. Many went on to mentor and coach the next generations.

The first women to compete in the Tour de France Femmes were more than just athletes—they were trailblazers. They didn’t just race; they redefined what was possible. Their determination and grit paved the way for generations of women racers who followed. Thanks to their efforts, the Tour de France Femmes has returned, stronger than ever, inspiring a new wave of riders to dream bigger and push harder.”

A film not to be missed.

I believe in fighting *for*, not just against.
~
So, yes. It’s critically important to hold those who opposed safe, sustainable transportation infrastructure by supporting to account.
~
But, my values (and the feedback I’ve gratefully received on these posts…I see you and hear you all!) compel me to highlight those green shoots amongst us who lead and support our cause.

is prominent amongst those on the side of the angels. His steadfast work against overwhelming odds in favour of pedestrians, cyclists and others who choose to navigate our cities outside of cars is noted and profoundly appreciated.
~
Do you support safe cycling infrastructure, environmental sustainability and respectful (and constitutional!) indigenous consultation?
~
Do you oppose building cities for cars not people, paving Ontario’s farmland and expensive, inefficient highway development run amok for the benefit of the hyper-wealthy few?
~
We need people like Joel at Queen’s Park. He’s not standing for re-election provincially, but .dance () () and .oc () are! Get the word out.

Yesterday was a *proper* Winter Bike to Work Day, hosted by in bracing cold, surrounded by a lot of snow! This year’s destination was on King William, and although it’s not , I have happy to see a business featured once more.
~
I was happy to serve as the ride leader from , meeting the group led by the indefatigable and Olivia coming up from Dundas.
~
These are great, community building events and I encourage you to keep an eye out for Ride to Work Day in early summer and next year’s winter edition!
~
As an added bonus, this was the first use of Wood Gate by Team Make, a Hamilton public art installation to be used to pedestrianize King William street for events just like this one! (See final photo, pilfered from the feed)

Is your M.P.P.?
~
I am featuring each of the Ontario MPPs who voted to rip out existing bike lanes, make it much more difficult for municipalities to construct new ones and to proceed to build Highway 413 prior to conducting environmental assessments or participating in consultation with First Nations.
~
Did you oppose on cycling, environmental, indigenous consultation (constitutional!) or other grounds?
~
Do you care enough to vote against those who supported it and to spread the word so others can too?
