🇨🇦 Canada’s immigration levels are once again at the centre of political debate.
Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner has opposed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s suggestion that Canada could consider increasing immigration levels, arguing that current population pressures are already affecting housing, healthcare and public services.
Rempel Garner pointed to government figures showing 112,000 new temporary foreign worker permits and 174,000 foreign student work permits issued between January and July 2026 — a combined 286,000 permits.
At the same time, IRCC says Canada is reducing temporary resident arrivals, with a 2026 target of 230,000 workers and 155,000 international students.
With the next Immigration Levels Plan expected by November 1, 2026, the debate over Canada’s future immigration levels is far from over.
