As of January 1, 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will increase the cost-of-living requirement for study permit applicants. The adjustment aims to better equip international students for their life in Canada, with an annual recalibration similar to other immigration programs.
For the year 2024, a solitary applicant must demonstrate possession of $20,635, in addition to covering their first-year tuition and travel expenses. This modification will be applicable to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024.
Furthermore, Minister Miller has issued an update on three temporary policies initially slated to conclude at the end of 2023, encompassing the following:
• International students already present in Canada and those who submitted a study permit application by December 7, 2023, can engage in off-campus work exceeding 20 hours per week until April 30, 2024.
• The provision allowing international students to include online study time in their future post-graduation work permit duration (up to 50% of the program of study) will persist for students commencing their program before September 1, 2024.
• A temporary policy granting an additional 18-month work permit for post-graduation work permit holders facing expiration will remain applicable to permits expiring by December 31, 2023. However, there will be no further extension of this temporary policy.
