As of January 22, 2024, The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced today that the Government of Canada will set an intake cap on international student permit applications to stabilize new growth for a period of two years and the number of new study permit applications that will be accepted in 2025 will be re-assessed at the end of this year.

In the spirit of fairness, individual provincial and territorial caps have been established, weighted by population, which will result in much more significant decreases in provinces where the international student population has seen the most unsustainable growth.

To implement the cap, as of January 22, 2024, every study permit application submitted to IRCC will also require an attestation letter from a province or territory. Provinces and territories are expected to establish a process for issuing attestation letters to students by no later than March 31, 2024.

Marc Miller, the Minister of IRCC, announced plans to implement several measures aimed at strengthening Canada’s International Student Program and at better protecting genuine students from fraud.

These measures are to protect the international students against fraud and to verify the letter of acceptance (LOA) to help avoid the similar situations that some of the students faced earlier this year.

IRCC will continue to work diligently with the CBSA to identify and act against unscrupulous actors who take advantage of genuine students.

The ministry also adds, being an international student isn’t a guarantee to become a permanent resident or Canadian citizenship.
The government is working actively working on solutions to have clearer pathways to PR.

* Starting December 1, 2023, Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) will be required to confirm every applicant’s letter of acceptance directly with IRCC, thus ensuring only genuine LOAs are issued.

* By fall 2024, IRCC will also adopt “recognized institution” to benefit Post-Secondary DLIs.

* IRCC to complete an assessment on Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) criteria in coming months.

High commission of India to resume the visa services today, as of October 26, 2023.

The decision came a month after New Delhi suspended the services in Canada and for the Canadian citizens worldwide.

The high commission said it is resuming business, medical and conference visas, as well as entry for people with family ties in India, beginning today.

For 2023 intake, IRCC goal is to accept up to 15,000 complete applications.

You can sponsor your parents and grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada if

- You submitted the interest to sponsor form in 2020 and
- You’re invited to apply for the 2023 intake.

If you submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020, you are encouraged to check an email account you provided in 2020 when you submitted your interest to sponsor form.
Invitations to apply will be sent randomly to selected potential sponsors from 2020 pool 🇨🇦

Sean Fraser, minister of IRCC announced the addition of 13 more countries to the electronic travel authorization (eTA) program.

Passport holders from these countries who have either held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or who currently hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa can now apply for an eTA instead of a visa when travelling to Canada by air.

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel or transit through Canada by air.

The application costs CAD$7 to apply, and most applications are automatically approved within minutes.

As of April 25, 2023 proof of funds for skilled immigrants (Express Entry) has been updated.

Proof of funds is required to show that you have enough money to settle in Canada.

Candidates eligible under Federal Skilled Worker Program or Federal Skilled Trades Program need to show they have enough funds to support themselves and their family.

You must be able to prove that you can legally access the money when you arrive.

The table on the next slide shows the minimum amount you need to immigrate to Canada if you are invited.

PSAC has now reached a preliminary agreements with government.

Members will now report to work starting on May 1 at 9 a.m. ET as the Treasury Board employees’ nationwide strike has ended.

Today, we will see the return to work of IRCC employees, which will restore the processing.

After nearly two years of bargaining leading to one of the largest strikes in Canadian history, PSAC has reached tentative agreements for the more than 120,000 Treasury Board workers who deliver critical services to Canadians.
